Hi there,

I'm having a hard time with the internal hard drive of my Alienware Area-51 Threadripper.
I've been using this computer for two years now with only an initial issue which has been resolved at the time (defective CPU)

In the past two months the internal hard drive, a Seagate 2TB, started giving me errors with folders disappearing. After a restart sometimes they were reappearing, when they were not a standard windows check disk would fix the problem.
It got worse to the point that I added two new drives, so I could use one for a constant backup and the other for work.
Now the two new drives, which I installed two days ago, are showing signs of the same issue! Folders are disappearing and I don't know what else to do.

I did some virus scan but everything looks fine. Dell remotely connected to check the computer, we spent hours and they couldn't find anything unusual.

But the problem is still here! What else now?

Hope someone has some ideas because this is driving crazy. I use my computer for work and I can't keep working with the constant stress of possibly losing sensitive data.

Did you use a fresh install of windows with the new drives? What operating system (assuming win10)? It looks like a corrupted windows install to me. If you install a program like HWiNFO64, you can check the S.M.A.R.T. status and other metrics to check for errors. You'll see a large window that appears to be similar to device manager in windows and a list of hardware with plus signs next to it. You can expand drives and then select a specific hard drive to check. Feel free to post screen shots.

I'll echo the suggestion to look at the SMART statistics for all drives. I'll also point out that I had a couple 2TB Seagate drives. One failed shortly after it was out of warranty and the other began going bad as well. Both reported remapped sectors with the "bad" one developing thousands before I retired it. The other is retired as well. Backblaze drive failure statistics mirror my experience, though IIRC their failure rate was less than the 100% I experienced. I would not advise using one of those for anything you would miss if the drive fails.

Look up SMART info....

try swapping out SATA cables and using a different sata port?

Fresh windows install, perhaps?

Thank you for the suggestions.

I installed HWiNFO and this is the info about the new hard drives:

and I too was considering reinstalling Windows.

I also have tried the three different hard drive ports and cables with the same results. The three drives are all Seagate but it seems quite a coincidence if they all have issues!

Yes it does, doesn't it? Did you do a check on the RAM as I suggested? Bad RAM can corrupt data.

That ram is a good performer generally. I have 64 GB of LPX at 3000 mhz.

I'm actually wondering if perhaps your power supply is putting your drives on the fritz... I say this because 3 drives in a row is unusual. Yes ram could be an issue too. What's your PSU like, how old is it?

I run the memory test and so far I didn't get any error.
The PSU is 850W. The specs are Threadripper 1950x, 512GB PCIe NVMe, dual 1080ti and originally the internal hard drive for my data a 2tb Seagate. Now I replaced that drive with another 2tb + 4tb both Seagate.
At the time of the purchase, I asked Dell about the PSU because I was wondering if it could hold 2 1080ti and they said with 2 I'm fine. I'm planning to replace it anyway as I want to add a third GPU.

Anyway, I've been using this computer for about 2 years now and I started getting this issue only a couple of months ago.
The common element among the three drives is that, since I use them for work I copied the same files on all of them because I need to access those files. Lots of assets (textures, 3d elements, clips and so on).
A friend of mine suggested it could even be a corrupted file(s) causing the issue and the fact that I'm carrying the same archives could corroborate that hypothesis.

use seagates tool to check HD life, each manufacture is a bit different on how the data is stored for smart data. head here https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/ would start with the last one in the list, seatools for windows. it might not show all the info but hopefully it shows enough to let you know what is going on with the drive.

if you want to see if it is possibly the cpu/imc/mc or even ram(a different way) use prime95, use small FTT or FFT's, set the same to be the max of the cpu's cache. such as for a intel it could be 3mb L3 or 6mb set that size in KB to be done by Prime95. i would skip blend test if the small test passes, use the option that will test the ram, large FFT's? set that to the max ram your system has. i would like to suggest to run it for a hr at least for each test. im not sure how fast it will work through going the cpu's cache in small mode or how long doing large for testing the ram. possibly test the ram while your sleeping just to make sure. the 3rd option is that if both of those pass it might be the memory controller in that case use the blend test.

another thought, take out the 2 sticks of ram you put in and see if the HD is still having issues. this assumes that seatools says the HD is going and no bad sectors or other issues.

Looking at the SMART data, I'd say both Seagate drives are bad. The Toshiba SMART data looks fine.

The 2TB drive has values for "read error rate", "seek error rate", and "hardware ECC recovered". The 4TB drive has values for "read error rate" and "seek error rate". For a healthy drive, these values should be 0 or a low number which doesn't increase. Additionally, these values don't usually indicate a bad cable or controller, as they are internal drive problems.

I think you got unlucky or there is a common factor we can't see here (bad packaging, etc).

I had two 2TB Seagate Barracudas. Here is some SMART data on both of them (from smartctl on Linux.)

The first one had experienced a growing reallocated sector count (5) for years. It was already out of service at this time. I took these readings when I had these drives in a test server where I was playing around with ZFS and I wanted to see how it handled a failed drive. It was useful for that purpose. The other drive was not nearly as bad but nevertheless was starting to grow reallocated sectors.

I think that starting with their 4K sector drives (including these) they either had some design problems or some QC lapses that caused excessive failure rates. This was borne out in the hard drive statistics published by Backblaze. Here's an article from early 2015 that paints Seagate in a pretty bad light https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/. I didn't buy Seagate for a long time. I think they have gotten better since, but that may not be reflected in drives in this size range.

Incidentally, the drive replacement went well for me. In another case I had a WD drive fail in a ZFS RAIDZ2 (similar I think to RAID6 - equivalent to 2 parity drives) and replaced the drive w/out power cycling or rebooting the server. I didn't even need to stop the RAID.

Tongue in cheek, I've been saying that friends don't let friends buy Seagate. I know that this is not a universally held view on the brand. However, I feel like they are the Maxtor of today. Cheap, fast and a gamble.

I also like the idea of running memtest 86+ to see if you have a RAM issue.

Yeah I have x2 6 TB Seagate Barracuda drives and they are actually my favorite drives that I have owned thus far. But Everyone is going to have their own experiences.

Yeah I have x2 6 TB Seagate Barracuda drives and they are actually my favorite drives that I have owned thus far. But Everyone is going to have their own experiences.

I have an 8TB Barracuda and an 8TB external. So far so good (except the external is a dog - probably uses SMR.) I think they sorted out whatever problems they had by then. I've also got some 200GB Barracudas that are soldiering on. but they're in non-critical applications due to their age.

Oh, I didn't notice that!
Meaning, they're basically useless now? Or is there a way to fix the errors?

Since these are internal problems, there is not a way to fix them, short of replacement.
