So I am putting together a computer for the girlfriend. I think I am going to be right on the edge with the power requirements. It's going to have

x4 955 - going to oc to like 3.6
H-60
HD 6970 - <--- Largest power draw
3 120 mm fans
1 7200hd
dvd drive
2x4gb ddr3 1600

I have all of the above and need to get a Mobo and a psu. So I was looking at this combo.

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine is giving me a recommended psu of 481 at 90%.

Should I be good with that PSU? She will not be OCing the GPU. Playing at 1680×1050

....herp derp @_@...
hello. you need at least a 550w psu accoding ati's website =.=
i would suggest a 650 watt just to be safe >.>

I'm going to go ahead and ignore this comment as I can see that you're new here. Generally herp derp is not the best way to start your responses on these forums.

Just because AM'D's site recommends some does not necessarily mean it's a must have. They are not drawing up a power requirement for every system so they play it safe and give a recommendation. Additionally, I mentioned that I used a PS calculator and it seems I would be ok.

With that said - I continued to do research after I posted this and it seems people have run the 6970s with a 500w psu. I very much value the input of the people on this forum. With some minor exception - - and wanted to run it by the forum before making the purchase.

im not an electrician but i think that uses up a lot of wattage >.>! plus you want to oc it. i dunno if thats the BE either but even the other one uses almost as much watts
i still think you may want to play it safe and spend an extra 20$ to get a slightly better psu because if that thing goes, kaboooooom your girlfriends place will explode and then you're gonna have firemen there and **** @_@
but like i said im not an electrician x.x so perhaps im wrong.
you would be living on the edge with a 500w psu =.= that ****s dangerous @_@
and theres also this

you got freaking watts everywhere @_@

I don't see anything that would need more than a quality 500-550W power supply, especially if no O/Cing is done on the CPU/GPU. Corsair, Seasonic, Silverstone, etc. Overkill for the system but the Shellshocker on NewEgg was good for the price. Not sure if modular if important to you or not. Personally I own two of these and they are rock solid, but I also have a Corsair CX500 that works just fine on a i5 2500k system.

You're more than fine with that CX500.

Edit:
125W for CPU
250W for GPU
~40W for Motherboard/HDD/etc

Total: 415W without OC.

All in all, a mild OC will do fine.

The cx500 has a 34amp 12v rail. It gives a max output of 34x12=408w.

You'll be on the edge, even at stock when cpu and gpu will be on load together. Without any kind of oc.

You'd better go at least with a 550w with a 40Ampb12v rail.

CX500 will be fine.
I wouldn't OC the 6970. Then again, my experience with 6970s is that the cooler isn't up for OCing anyway.

^I was running my 6950 ref unlocked @990/1490 24/7, with a x4@4ghz/1.5v and my bequiet 530w/420w on the 12v rail was not up to the task...

I appriciate all the input. Just to reiterate, i will NOT be overclocking the card. She is playing on a lower rez so that 6970 wont be sweating. I was able to hit 3.6 on that cpu with stock volts. Obviously the mobo wont be quite as good but if i do have to give the cpu more power it wont be much. I may just push it to whatever i can at stock power and leave it there.
