I did'nt reinstall windows when I got my new mb. I know I have to reinstall windows to use AHCI. I'm puzzled that my HDD works fine in any of the 6 sata channels on the mobo. I thought it had to be in channel 0 to boot from it.

also the HDD is always reported by the bios at boot on channel 2 regardless of which one its plugged into.

I found this oddness while diagnosing a new problem..looks like a ram stick has died.

When Sata is in IDE compatibility mode, the ide port is being emulated so that is why no matter what sata port you plug your drive into, it will work. There isnt much of a diff between ide and ahci mode in performance, and usually it is more hassle than it is worth to set up in ahci.
