Question about linking your Hotmail to Windows 10

My friend got a virus and instead of dealing with the hassle of getting rid of it I told her to back her important files up and reset the computer. She said she didn't buy the laptop with windows 10, but took the upgrade from 8. My question is, if she linked her Hotmail, does she need a product key when she goes back to 10? Won't it recognize the hardware and automatically activate?

Reset has an option to keep your files/settings so i assume it doesn't mess with the activation : http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/reset-windows-10-pc

Once activated, your hardware is permanently assigned a Windows 10 key which is stored in the cloud, so re-activation is done automatically, unless major hardware changes were made, like you changed motherboards for example.
