question about wifi

Hello all,
I'm living in a house in which my neighbor allows me to access the wifi from his modem. No problem. My laptop picks it up fine. The thing is my mobile phone must have a much weaker wifi pickup because it's an on-off thing. Never a steady connection. I have to be constantly reconnecting. If I purchased one of those usb powered extender thingies, thinking of one from Ideaworks, would it be picking up the wifi signal from the neighbor and amplifying it in general for my workspace and thus help out the mobile phone? thx

Should help, always put the extender as close to the source as it would still be usable.

Their WiFi router, yes.
