Happy New Year to all the people over here.

I've just completed the secure erase on my HDDs(in my sig). I'm starting fresh in 2014. So far, I'm waiting to install an OS and some advice about buying an SSD(posted in hardware forum). I have both Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and Windows 8 Pro 64-bit lying around and am confused which one to use. I have Windows 8 in my laptop but Windows 7 seems better to me. Which OS do you people suggest? And Please suggest me a good antivirus (free or paid). Currently thinking of Microsoft Security Essentials along with Malwarebytes Pro.

WIN7 all the way. WIN8 is without a doubt meant for use with a tablet as theyre trying to brifdge the gap between tablet and laptop all of a sudden hence the release of 8.1 instead of something desktop users would like. and i use mcafee total protection and have never had a problem it has a scan tool that scans every file on your computer within about a half hour and it always comes up perfectly clean. my brother had no security software on his laptop for a good 3 months. downloaded mcafee and it detected 9 viruses and killed i believe 8 of them and located the last one for him to simply delete.

Unless there is a specific other reason, the above statement that Windows 8 is "without a doubt meant for use with a tablet" is only correct if you don't spend a minute to install this freeware to make Windows 8 behave exactly like Windows 7 from the moment you boot in:

Microsoft Security Essentials is very easy to use and is better than nothing but this freeware has better definitions and can match most pay-for anti virus definitions:

Thank you both for the valuable help. I received my SSD yesterday and have installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Currently using Avira and loving it (the little umbrella is cute) :p
