My first SSD was a Patriot 32GB drive, got if for $100 at Fry's on a liquidation sale. Was amazed at the speed. Wasn't capable of TRIM in the new Winderz 7. Got the next gen a year or two later.

Similar steps here. First SSD was a 64GB OCZ Vertex for Christmas one year, my "Big Wish Item" to friends and family. The MSRP was $180 at the time.

I'll admit, SSDs went from "why would I" to "why wouldn't I" quicker than I thought.
