On the firing line.
I recently picked up a 5850 off of ebay and on first boot I noticed that temperatures were extremely high across the board (73C idle on GPU). Figured that the previous owner mucked up the mount, so I took it apart. There was no TIM material ANYWHERE...not on the GPU, not on the mem chips, not on the power reg. I'm assuming he had an aftermarket cooler on it and just slapped stock HSF to ship it...

Anyway, I got some AS5 on the GPU, and got the temps under control there (33C idle), but the power regs and ram are still not being cooled so I popped the card out until I can find some tape. Now I need to find some thermal tape that will work for the mem chips and the power regs.

Any suggestions?

Couldn't you try using thermal compound instead of the tape? or does it not make a strong enough contact without the extra spacing the tape gives?

Yeah, for right now I'm scouring my closet in hopes of finding an old stock HSF and stripping the tape off of it. Should have an 8800 cooler somewhere in there.

not easy to find, i am looking for links to it

depending on the type i would not want to reuse, because some of the foam types push the oiley interface materials around on squish.

i think people like us , should have that stuff onhand, like tim, none of my local stores carried it, even though they knew exactally what i was talking about , and how nessisary it would be when re-timming .
