I remember reading that different types of artifacts indicated what was actually error'n.

Like funky shapes, polygon like, was memory and vertical lines/dots was GPU. Vice versa or something like that.

Anyone know what I am talking about?

I can tell you from experience when you slip with a screwdriver while removing a fan/heatsink that a scratched PCB gives all kinds of funny shapes and colors.

We'll, I've seen a bunch of types. Mostly random black, green, or purple dots. Completely fubared textures, textures drawn too far, etc, and more.
