Hey guys. I'm gonna upgrade my comp. to Win 7 in less than a month and was also considering a hardware upgrade.

My current specs.

Core i7 920 C0 @ 3.9GHz (186x21)
Intel DX58SO
3GB DDR3 (PC3-10700H) 1333MHz RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4890
600W CoolerMaster Power supply.

I was thinking of upgrading the RAM to 6GB 1600MHz & adding another 4890.

My question, do you think I'll need a new Power Supply or is the 600W enough?

Thnx

It should be enough. The system in my sig is very similar to what you propose, but with 6x2GB sticks, 2x4850HDs, and runs fine on a corsair 600w. Good luck!

~Cheers!

There's an Ultra X3 800w PSU in your sig, and I don't know of any Corsair 600 watt units. 620 and 650, yes, never heard of 600 though.

Also, the 4890 draws a good bit more power than a 4850, and depending which Cooler Master unit he has, it might not be up to the task. OP, which one is it?

Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 600W, Model RS-600-PCAR-E3.

That's a somewhat substandard unit. It's vaguely rated at >70% efficiency, and carries 2 12v rails rated for 18A each, for a total of 432 watts on the 12v rails. By way of comparison, a Corsair VX550W is rated for 41 amps on the 12v, and even the lowly VX450W comes in at 33 amps, only 3 less than the Cooler Master "600w" PSU.

No way in heck would I trust it to run an overclocked i7 with a pair of 4890's. Definitely step up to a good quality 650-750 watt PSU before you add another card. The TX650W appears at first glance to be only 50 watts more than the CM, but the 12v rail is rated for 52A or 624 watts. Almost 200 more watts where it counts.

Note that I'm not saying you should buy Corsair, it's just the brand I use. They're priced fairly and just work.

Hmm, Now I'll have to drop my RAM.

Thanks ratbuddy. You were really helpful.

P.S. Where'd you get all that info from?
