What exactly is memory training?

This is something I kinda vaguely understand in the sense the mobo adjusts some settings for the current modules. I just tried to look for more specifics on it but came up short. As subject, what exactly does memory training do? How does it work? What settings are affected? Are those settings user viewable/settable or otherwise hidden?
