  < Performance Tips >
Warning 2533: Disabled host controllers are present. Check
                                   BIOS settings.
Tip 2530: MPS 1.4 or later is recommended for MP
                                   systems. Check BIOS version.
Notice 224: SMBIOS/DMI information may be inaccurate.
Warning 2507: Mainboard has too few memory slots. Upgrading
the memory may be difficult or expensive.
Tip 2511: Some memory slots are free so the memory can
                                   be easily upgraded.
Warning 100: Large memory sizes should be made of
                                   Registered/Buffered memory.
Tip 2546: Large memory modules should be ECC/Parity.
Tip 2: Double-click tip or press Enter while a tip
is selected for more information about the

i have it running on an athlon64 box with an ali/uli chipset, you should be fine.

i might also add........ pcbsd runs great on older pc's even, i had it running on a p2 300 mhz celeron 384mb ram and it was responsive and very usable.

Just wanted to add, I was just kidding....but that is an awful lot of info!
Let us know if you get it working, I was never able to get PC-BSD to work on my machine.

Sorry it is so long.

Here's how you can clean it up. Go back into your first post and click on the edit then advanced edit. Next click on the # button to get the code wrapping brackets [-code-][-/code-] (without the dashes). Put the code bracket in front of your text and the /code bracket at the end. Click on quote of this post to see how I did it.

***** End of Report *****

Now it wont take up so much room and we can still easily scroll though the entire code.

BTW I'm looking at PC-BSD too. I don't want to hassle with the FreeBSD base of 5.5 that DesktopBSD is stuck on. FreeBSD isn't too hard to install but I don't want to hassle with the learning curve right now.

Same goes with Gentoo. I just want it windows easy to install. I'll learn more about it later LOL.

I've got Windows down and don't have to work too hard at installing and tweaking it post install.

College is all the learning curve I can tolorate right now.

you'll love pcbsd. very easy to install, very easy to install extra software. the PBI system is very similar to how things work in windows.

Thanx, I'll download the PC-BSD torrent and start the preparations.

The DesktopBSD looked good except that they are slow to get the latest FreeBSD 6x base integrated.

I need a cheap PATA->SATA adaptor and an SATA cable to utilize a 40GB drive I have laying around.

I'll do the latest Live CD Gentoo install too.

My Raptor is reserved for my Windows XP installation at the moment. I may eventually get Vista to dual boot with XP but I haven't decided yet. That $400 would also buy me a real nice 12x9 PC tablet for Photoshop and other drawing apps.

i would say forget about vista, unless there is some feature that you absolutely MUST have, there is no reason to upgrade to it. Too much headache. I'd even say get rid of XP unless there is something you absolutely need it for (for me, it's games and solidworks)

I like XP a lot but Vista not so much. Windowblinds will get you that transparent window edge effect but I'm not sure how stable Windows would run with the Object Desktop Suite running in the background. Lots cheaper than Vista.

My hacked uxtheme.dll driver lets me change themes easy enough ;)

Photoshop isn't ported for Linux and I don't think the Mac version would run on BSD LOL. So it looks like I'll end up riding XP into the EOL sunset.

I'll also see how many apps I can shift over to nix.

The only issue I have with BSD is it's lack of drivers to read/write to other file systems.

I might wait until atleast version 1.5 on PC-BSD & I would get Windows XP, but Windows ME is still $100 in stores so I lnow XP is to much.

Ed, please clean up your first post. You need to wrap it in code tags like I showed you in post #8.

Why wait? If it's as easy to install as they say, you can just reinstall again when 1.5 comes out.

OTOH DesktopBSD looks like it will rock once version 1.6 gets out as that will have a FreeBSD 6.2 base instead of 5.5.

Photoshop isn't ported for Linux and I don't think the Mac version would run on BSD LOL. So it looks like I'll end up riding XP into the EOL sunset.

I agree with you. The only weak areas I see in BSD/Linux are their lack of graphics/audio/video editing apps and gaming.
If Adobe Premier or iMovie type stuff was available for Linux I would be so happy. I am sure, in time, they will come.
I wish I could program.

i'm not quite sure what you guys are talking about with having to reinstall pc-bsd to change version. AFAIK, it is simple to upgrade, just as FreeBSD or the majority of Linuxes are easy to upgrade, without reinstalling. I thought they released PBI's to do the upgrade, but I might be completely wrong.

Ed, please clean up your first post. You need to wrap it in code tags like I showed you in post #8.

Did it for him.

FWIW.... with regard to the "detaching yourself from Windows" debate - I attended that VMware conference a couple of years back... got a free 5.x license for Linux.

I don't have an absolute killer app that I need to have, just a couple that I prefer on one platform or the other. VMware Workstation, as of their latest 5.x release, has a feature to allow running an OS that is natively installed (as in, a dual boot configuration) inside the host OS..... which, I must say, is really, really convenient. It won't suffice for gaming (you'd have to keep games in the host OS) or for any apps that directly access non-USB device hardware (ala TV Tuners, etc) but for me, it works.

The major drawback of VMware, or other emulation, was previously you were forced to run off a "virtual" disk, which was actually just a file on the host OS' filesystem. Hence, a dual boot Win/Lin machine with VMware Windows install running in Linux would have to be a completely seperate Windows install.

I have a program that needs access to my Powertap head (bicycle power computer) and it plugs in via a USB port, works great when running inside the VM. Something to consider....

Why wait? If it's as easy to install as they say, you can just reinstall again when 1.5 comes out.

OTOH DesktopBSD looks like it will rock once version 1.6 gets out as that will have a FreeBSD 6.2 base instead of 5.5.

Well I am just ify about the PPPoE setup & how easy that will be.
