So I updated my OS to windows 8.1 from windows 7 yesterday and it gave me the option of transfering all of my files to the next OS so I said yes. Now I have a windows.old file that has nothing in it. WTF. I'm currently running some file recovery software to see if something is still recoverable but seriously windows?

Are you running the OS as administrator or user?
You would notice the C: Drive will be considerably larger in usage having both the new OS and the Old files. If this is so, the files are there, you just can't see them....
But man that does suck. Hope you get it figured out!

You could try running the Recover Personal Files tool...
