Network description:
WinXP Home box-> crossover cable-> Linux-based Frewall+DHCP+Snort+proxy+Primary DNS+NAT-> patch cable-> DSL modem->ISP.

The Erroring Update:
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
This update helps narrow the definition of the My network, or local subnet, restriction option in the Windows Firewall. This is helpful in situations where the Windows Firewall would consider a large network to be on the local subnet because of how the dial-up software configured the route tables. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

The Error message:
Installation Failure
Error Code: 0xD0000005

The error as written in the log:

Steps I have taken:
Formatted, reinstalled, and tried again.
Rebooted and tried again.
Searched MS FAQ.
Searched MS Find Solutions.
Searched and followed suggested fixes in Windows Update Newsgroup.

If anyone has any suggestions, fire away.
If more info is need, I'll find and report.
Thanks!

Have you tried downloading and installing the update manually?...

I have not, no. Thank you for the link. The update site claims that the file is already downloaded, but not yet installed. Does that make a difference?
After reading the following quote, I am not sure I want to do a manual install.

Warning, if you install one hotfix manually, then you may be forced to uninstall all hotfixes and reinstall them manually, one at a time and thus literally at least close to 100 reboots!

I do not want to go through this hassle.

After installing hundreds of MS updates and hotfixes manually over the years, from Win95 to Vista, I've never experienced having been "forced to uninstall all hotfixes and reinstall them manually, one at a time and thus literally at least close to 100 reboots"... but of course the decision is yours.
