A few years ago I bought a PERC H310 for my NAS with the intent to flash to IT mode and add to my JBOD 'array'. It sat on a shelf for years and when I finally tried to set it up, the card was toast. I don't know if storing conditions were the problem or if the card was DOA, but I cannot return it now 
Years have passed since that purchase, and I wonder if there is a new gold standard in the RAID/HBA arena for the home NAS builder. I just want to add as many HDD as possible with the best performance/dollar. I will admit that I haven't looked into this issue yet, but I plan on spring boarding from suggestions here if I can.
