Not to much of a suprise on who got first. Though I am suprised ones like PC-Cillin got so low. Still though if you forget the ranks and consider that most people will be getting the same dozen viruses going around the web at one time, the numbers probably don't mean as much since any of the top names should have the main viruses listed and be able to remove them. Heuristics on the other hand could really come in handy for a lot of people since many don't seem to think updating is important. Personally I am using Kaspersky so glad to see it's still on top.

The AOL software is supposed to be Kaspersky rebranded... and freewared. However, I am leery of AOL software (other than AIM... to a degree...)... so should I try the AOL antivirus out or stay as far away as possible?

I'm using Avast at the moment, by the way....

I'm surprised that Ewido did that well (38 & 39) considering it's not an anti-virus, but an anti-spyware program...though they are now partnered with AVG which 'aint doing so hot as such.
Kaspersky's has been my recent favorite though, and this backs my decision.

I am surprised NOD32 scored 10th on known Viruses. :s

I know it always been the est at finding unknown viruses but it was lways in the top 3 for known I thought also...

MAn things sure have changed there...

I would switch but having only 2 processes running and using under 20MB of RAM... eset cant be beat

EDIT: Im actually a little confused about the second set of results using heuristics... they word it as viruses that would NOT have been detected if heuristics was turned off?? Why test that? So nod32 without heuristics is worse then the free AVs that detected less then 50% of viruses anyway???

The second set of numbers is using only heuristics. Meaning that if a new virus comes out and you get it before you update your computer it may be able to find it based on its heuristics technology. So those numbers could be pretty helpful to someone on 56k or someone who would just like to feel secure when new viruses are released.

As mentioned, it uses Kaspersky scan engine I do believe. So does another on the list but I forget which, the difference is the other uses the 5.0 engine not 6.0. I must say from looking at the list F-Secure has suprised me. I used to use it a few years ago but it seemed to be going down the tubes. I am glade to see it's still or starting to pull back to the top.

i can't believe aol uses the kaspersky scan engine. i love my kaspersky.... now if they can only separate the rest of aohell from that scan engine and well... i guess it wouldnt be aol anymore, lol.

I am not sure the method Kaspersky uses, but if they are using all the AOL people as a way for their heuristics to find unknown ones that are then sent back to the labs to be analyzed. It could really help themselves stay on top in the known virus category as well as help all the AOL users. Not to mention AOL probably payed them a large sum haha.

kaspersky is the best at detection.

i administer it in a corp environment, i have to deploy, maintain it etc...

the software is terrible... so far i have sent about 10 questions to the support which they cant fix and thats because the software is buggy and badly designed.

i cant really comment about the home edition but stay away from it if your an admin because its a total pain

Yes, I use both NAV and SAV, the latter in an enterprise environment. And yes, I already knew how crappy the home editions of NAV were. The fact remains is that SAV's integration into Microsoft SMS makes it far easier to manage than most other enterprise AV products. Doesn't stop the product itself from being crufty, but when it's what you've got, it's what you've got.

Appears to be the link to the free AV from AOL that got second on the list. As for Norton yeah it does suck as in taking up to much system power and not delievering when it comes to scanning. Though it does do just about everything and in a rather simple way, so for that I give them credit. I know many people who use Norton System Works for their AV just because it can do everything else, and came free with their system. People don't always want the best, they want the easiest. Just like Windows; which is why Norton has and will most likly stay on top for some time to come.
