So, I buy the thing, the total board with gigbit, Sata, 1394, and other things that do me little good. I run stereo anyhow, and the on-board audio has background noise, but how would I do 5.1 if I wanted to. I wouldn't mind sending the pure ".1" signal to my sub.

come on now, who's got the goods on this one?

Yeah, the 5.1 decoder has to be built into the speakers or reciever that you plug it into. The optical SPDIF output is your only option for 5.1. I personally use an Audigy so I can get surround but have been considering plugging the optical out into my home theatre system just to see what I get. If I could come up with a 20ft. optical cable cheap I would try it.
