I am starting the overclocking process, but must admit that I'm somewhat of a noob in this deparment. Anyway, I have a athlon 2400+ overclocked 100mhz so far. I just ordered a volcano 11, because i'm afraid to overclock it much more with the bundled headsink and fan that amd sell.

Anyway, when my volcano 11 arrives I had some questions about the thermal paste that I ordered with it. I know I need to use this paste on the cpu to help with conduction, and decrease the temperature. However, how do I remove the existing thermal paste? How thick should it be? Do I place it all over the cpu, or just on the center where the old paste was.

Any hints or tips for overclocking my system would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a asus a7n8x mobo.

well, first off, list you specs in your sig, and which a7n8x? is it a deluxe 2.0? X? what bios? check under "system information" under your start menu

put some paste on the heatsink, rub it around good, and just whipe off w/ a lint-free material(coffee filter will work), for the processor, use some isopropyl alcohol(no fragerance), put the paste only on the center part(core), just a very thin layer, about .1mm-.3mm, might wanna use an exacto knife to smooth it down, and that's it

bah i have to differ the comment on the thermal right.. i'm running my big ol' one pound copper thermaltake volc 7+ from what i understand it's way effecitent even over the newer volc's from TT..
at full load (prime95 in back) burn in ( and loops of quake 3 maxed) i dont even break 40C and that's using ikky white paste cooling compound.. :D

Yeah, just scrape that ole thermal pad off with a knife or Xacto blade. I like to use a glass scraper to do mine when I remove thermal pads. Then I just use a cotton rag with some alcohol and wipe it till the pad is completely gone. After that I use a piece of warn out 200 grit sand paper till it gets good and shiny and then move on to a lighter grit and make the surface even shinier. You should get some pretty good cooling after doing that.

No prob replice, differ all you want.
Just for your information:

In tests using T-Bred B 1700+ results were better than Volcano 7+ by 212-300 MHz
and 347-433 MHz better than Volcano 9, Volcano 11.

However, results were only 30 MHz better than with

$15.99 Thermalright SK-7

Don't forget a fan, nothing too loud, but pretty much any 80x25mm will do with SK-7.

Look for directions on how to apply thermal paste (it comes with sk-7) but this is a good one:
