I am not a fan boy of either nvidia or ATI.

What is the best video card I can buy for under $300.00

I was looking at either a 7800gt card or an x800xl card.

I am leaning toward the 7800gt but of course it is a bit more money.

Is there a particular 7800gt or x800xl card I should look at?

I saw this one

It's really not worth it for the extra speed for $50 unless money is no object to you (and if that's the case, you'd be getting 7800GTX 512MBs anyway). Only get the CO version if you get lucky and find a good deal on it. The X1800XL is better and faster in most cases. It's also a little more expensive, the cheapest you'll find one retail from a reputable shop is around $350 or so. But new ones have been sold on eBay for $300 recently (search for completed listings to see). So, if you feel confident about buying on eBay (which I generally do), that'd be the way to go.

The 7800GT is better and faster (especially if OCd) in most cases over the XL. Only real exception is if you want to run 6x AA. At 1280x1024 I run 2x AA, 16AF, hi IQ, plus transparency AA. GT is still much cheaper last time I looked so best bang would go to the 7800 easily.
