When applying artic silver 2 or 3 to the GPU Core of the ati radeon 9700 pro , remove the shim first. Removing the shim is pretty easy as ATI used cheap thermal paste to get it on , just take a razor blade and gently force it in between the core and the GPU. Then begin slidding the razor blade till you start seeing the shim come off. Note: Make sure your razor blade isn't leaning on an angle to damage the GPU core while cutting through the thermal epoxy ati used , to remove the shim as you can damage the gpu like that. After all this is done I suggest then puting a thin coat of artic silver to the gpu core (die) as if you where doing an athlon thermal paste apply. Hope this helps , worked very nicely for me.

With my exisiting Heatsink , that came with my radeon 9700 pro. It has the 2 lil pins that goto the board with springs. That's whats holding it. The damn board isn't even warm now , I love it :D
