My brother in law's Duron 800 w/256mb generic ram started wigging out last night after installing a self contained Linux (for www.finalscratch.com hardware/software). After install (maybe coincidentally), when it posted and check the memory it was checking it in burstslike 0 - 64000 - micropause - 64001 - 92000 - micropause... etc.
Then windows wouldn't boot up, but the linux would ?
Then overnight he had what he called a 'brownout' and suddenly, the memory checking problem went away and windows booted..
Then on a subsequent reboot (maybe the very next one) the mem prob came back and windows didn't boot.
So I pulled his mem chip to see about re-seating it. Popped it back in and beep - beep - beep - beep endless loop.
Tried different ram (2 seperate sticks): same
Pulled memory, cmos battery and cleared cmos, reinstalled memory : same
Tried different CPU: same
Any ideas? Dead motherboard?
