I just received two copper cold blocks today. I am using a 226 watt peltier. Which one should I use?

No 1/4 inch is plenty to get the heat spread out.

3/4 inch would be a lot of excess copper between the CPU and the cold side of the pelt.

isnt 3/8 or 1/2inch optimum? or does 1/4inch work just fine?

1/4" will work just fine. I have used coldplates as thin as .090" and got good results but temp stability suffers somewhat with a plate that thin. A 10mm (3/8") gives the best tradeoff of temp stability and effeciency. Its all personal preference really.. I prefer temp stability over getting the absolute lowest temp possible so I use 7/16" coldplates for all peltiers 48mm x 48mm and larger.

Bill's article shows a fairly small difference in the spreading resistance between 1/4" and 3/8" although 3/8" is a little better.

With a choice between 1/4 and 3/4 though, I'd definitely go with 1/4".
