I currently own a G4 Ti 4400 with a P4 2.6c on an Intel 865PERL with 512MB Corsair Dual Channel TwinX DDR 400.Im looking to spend about $250 on a new grahpics card and Ive been considering one of the two mentioned above. Any suggestions?

Definitely go ATI. Personally, I recommend the 9800NP if you can get one over the 9700 Pro.

A 9800NP will overclock way above Pro speeds on the core, and on the memory, it depends on which type of memory your NP comes with, Samsung or Infineon. If you get Samsung, you can go way over Pro speeds on the RAM, and with Infineon, you can usually get right under Pro speeds. Either way, it will outperform a stock Pro. (And, of course, a 5900 Ultra)

hmm in that case maybe I ought to get my friend a 9800np hmm hmm hmm :p But how can you be sure you don't get that cheap infineon ram? I have it on both my 9700np and 9500pro and it's a POS. I can barely o/c the 9700 or 9500pro 20 mhz. Currently I o/c the 9500 to 290-292mhz where it's stable. Oh well.

If you buy a BBA (Built By ATI) card, it's just luck of the draw. I wouldn't really call it POS, though. It still overclocks, and you still have a pretty good card.

Just find a used 9700Pro for around the $200 mark. I honesty can't reccomend getting a 9800NP anymore, seeing as how its getting harder and hard to find ones with Samsung chips. If you can pick up a used one off eBay for like $220, then go for it, but otherwise it's not quite as good a deal, when a real 9800Pro is only $50 more than a new 9800NP. Plus you'll almost certainly overclock a lot farther with a real Pro than a NP. Of course, $300 is out of your price range, so my original reccomendation stands. :D If you can find a refurbished/used 5900 for close to $200, that's also a good deal, though I would rather have a 9700Pro than a 5900 (but not by much).

9800NP >>> 9800PRO i miss my card.......i killed it last month.........but not i have a 9800PRo but doesn't overclock as good as the 9800NP with PRO :(

Another vote for the 9800NP here. I have one with infineon chips that goes just above stock pro speeds on the memory, but not much more. It's a great performing card for the it's price range.

You can get the 5900 SE models for under 200 bux if you look at pw. Only difference between them and reg 5900s is the ram. SE models has 2.8 ns ram whereas the reg 5900s has 2.2 ns ram.
I have a reg eVGA 5900 and I can oc the core to past 500 and the ram to at least 950. Although I run it oc'ed at 465/920.
It was the reg 5900s that was going for 235 bux at pw.

Get a 9700pro or 9800np. Those are the only two worthy choices IMO. I don't trust the 5900's DX9 support and image quality as far as I can spit.

Love my 9700 pro! Handles dual monitors while gaming(game/desktop, or even game/movie!) exceptionally well, image quality is superb, and the benchmarks speak for its performance...

dont get any fx cards, youll regret it once you begin to really play dx9 games. get a $200 9700 pro

HOLY CRAP, he didnt recomend a ti4x series card. i am impressed:). but yeah get the 9800np, it should be right around the same price as the 9700pro.

Well actually there's one thing that the FX series is better for than the ATI cards are. Emulation, unfortunatly not all of us care for 12x FSAA through riva tuner I suppose. I know I don't miss it that much considering I have my 9500 and 9700 which I both love, not as much as I would if I could OC them properly.
