to cut the chase, this is what you see in the last article I link to:
"Seagate ... fail rate 1,3%, Maxtor (2,2%). Western Digital (2,4%) and IBM (3,3%)." (this comes from data on more than 1 million drives combined) http://www.tweakers.net/nieuws/29281
these are the failure rates seen by a large online shop in France, with large numbers of drives sold, so those results are pretty reliable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
first of all, a really nice place to look at reliability accounts from a personal perspective from different people is the storagereview reliability survey/database.
you need to register though.
I had a look, and seagate does seem to have some very reliable drives, Barracuda ATA 3, 4, 5 all were around 90% more reliable than other drives.
for more objective results, I've found these reports:

this was in May 2003, and reposted in a table here:
(dutch)

"Gemiddeld" means average. "mei" is just May.
and most recently:

most notable was that the 200GB Maxtor had a spectacularly high failure rate of 8.8%, and the 60GB 180GXP had a pretty awful 7,03%.
these results all come from LDLC, one of the largest online shops in France.
