which processor for maximum compatability

I need to build a computer for work. The computer will primarily be used for imaging and image analysis (scientific stuff). What would be a better platform for such a system? AMD or Intel? The computer will be used with various microscopes and imaging software.

If you want to go the cheap route, go AMD, which is quite fast for its price. Unless you really need sped and able to spend and extrra $200-300, get a P4 with HT, i guess.
