I have several black lights and some colored lights that might be neon. They are the automotive type. I am pretty certain the black lights are florescent and use tubes like this.

I also have some under counter lights (120v) that use identical looking bulbs but not near as bright and the above bulb that I linked to is the actual model bulb they use.
The colored ones are like these.

Fyi I borrowed that shot from this thread

I have used these in my computer and or on my desk before, but what I was wondering is if I could remove the bulbs, maybe seal the ends with silicon and put them directlly inside the computer? With the auto black light ones at least, there is just a bulb in the unit (no other electronics or components) though it does have an external unit. The neon ones have a small board inside the light stick.

So the enclosures are quite large and I was wondering if I could do away with the enclosure to fit in tighter spaces. Has anyone heard of this being tried or know if it is safe?

I think they will still 'function' but i suspect that they willbecome much less reliable. And far more sucepable to static discharges, and other wear and tear encounterd when moving stuff around and relocating with in the case for example.

Anyway... i think a friend of mine has done it when i recal looking into his rig the last time. It seems to work for him. If you dont mind maybe loosing the lights, go ahead and go for broke.

Thanks. The lights are not serving any purpose right now (just sitting in a box) so I think I might try it (once I get everything worked out with overclocking the new mother board and cpu that I put in this system).
