philips dvd+r's - will only read in a philips drive or the drive they were burnt on. They're riddled with crc errors if read in any other drive. Crappy media, or software?

Well if they don't have a lot of PIF or PIE when tested on the philips drive then it most likely wouldn't be the case of the media. I have some crap media that when burned correctly I still get really low PIE and decent PIF.
Make sure you're burning it at the right speed and no faster than 8x. Are you trying to read it in other computer's dvd drives? How old are the other computer's drives? What OS do they run?
If you're trying to read it in regular DVD players, well then media, burner, +R vs -R, and dvd player all come into effect in how well it will play.
