Before I start let me give you my current system specs and reason for upgrading.

Current System,
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI board
AMD FX-55 CPU
1 Gig Ram
Dual Sli'ed BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC
Ultra X2 550w PSU

One of my graphic cards went out and now I am wanting to upgrade. I was thinking about getting a pair of the new Nvidia 9600GTs and another gig of ram but I have been told that my system will bottleneck it no matter what graphic card I get. So, I have decided to upgrade the mobo and cpu but I haven't built a system in a few years and I haven't kept up with the latest products. I mostly play Nr2003, Battelfield 2, and I have just bought Frontlines but haven't played it yet. Could someone give me some suggestions on what to get? My budget is around $600 for mobo, cpu and ram. Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help.

Abit IP35-E - $69.99AR

Intel Q6600 - $245

Tuniq Tower HSF - $39.99

2x1gb PC6400 Crucial Ballistix - $34.99AR

8800GT - $199.99AR

Total: $679.96 - $90 MIR = 589.96 + 13.43 Shipping = $603.39

Or you can go with the E8400 for $25 less but they are always OOS.

This is another board that is good for overclocking
Gigabyte P35-DS3L - $89.99

Also this is one of the best coolers out there but it is a little more:
Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme - $57.99

LilBuddy do you know if thermalright ultra 120 extreme fixed the adaptar?

"...the location of the added pipes does create some issues with the Intel socket 775 adapter carried over from the current Ultra 120 kit. The adapter frankly won't fit through the heatpipes in the new design. We actually had to bend the Socket 775 adapter to mount the Ultra 120 Extreme on a Core 2 Duo."

good luck, I'm building a new system to... just waiting for more deals

If you your going for a high OC on a Q6600 I would not settle for less than a 120 extreme if you have the room. It may not be perfect and require some work for the best performance but it has been proved to dissapate the most heat.

Let me also say that this is going to be my first atempt to oc anything. Will that mobo and cpu be easy to oc for a noob? I had thought about this Graphic card,

EVGA 512-P3-N867-AR GeForce 9600GT SSC 512MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130330&Tpk=e-GeForce+9600+GT+SSC+512MB

Would the 8800GT suggested above be a better card? Also, as far as the coolers I would like to get one that fits easy since I am not use to working with anything other than a standard heatsink and fan.

In and of itself it is not bad but you could do better. Only go SLI or crossfire if you are going to use two top end cards, otherwise go with a single card solution.

I would go with an intel chipset either, P35 or X38, and an 8800GTS. The quad is a fine choice.

If you feel you must go with an nvidea chipset at least go with a 780. The 680 is going to limit your ability to use 45nm quads in the future.

Also over $200 for a 9600GT is way to much. You can get a 8800GT for that much.

If you went with an Asus P5E and an EVGA 8800GTS your total price would be $120 cheaper, assuming two 9600's, otherwise whats the point of the SLI board?

Just my perspective anyways.

ou-phidelt,

Thanks for your input. I am wanting a SLI board because I want to add another card later. I have built a few systems but they have been lower end. With this build I am wanting to get some real good performance and learn a little about over clocking. With that said which of the mobo's would you go with? Like I said I am wanting to add another card later so it needs to be a SLI board.

What is your monitor resolution? If you aren't going up very high to game then SLI and higher cards is worthless.

I have a ViewSonic but I can't remember the model number. It runs at 1280x1024. If I need to upgrade the monitor I will do that later also.

That on top of the fact that by the time you(at least most people) decide to add a second card things have changed dramatically and a newer single card is a much better choice than two older cards. I know I would rather have one 8800GTX rather than two 7900GTX's. Or for that matter one G92 GTS than two G80 GTS'.

i just missed your reply.

I could mistaken here but I am pretty sure at that resolution SLI would be a waste. You need to be in the 1600X1050 range before it will really be worth while.

Take it with a grain of salt, GPU's are not my specialty.
