For team 32 :)

I'd folded in the past, but took a break because my ancient computer was overheating. Now I have a new i7 rig, as well as my first overclock. Putting all that power to use, folding. Also my first time actually doing work for team 32.

Questions: I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 with 6.24beta. The process only uses half of my cpu. Normal?
Is it worth trying to get the GPU client running? I know GPUs are pretty good, but I've "only" got a 260, and I'd be running it under wine. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.

Can't wait for the PPD to start rolling in

I'm just the new guy but let me be the first to welcome you to the team.

To use your CPU to the fullest, make sure you're running with
Code:
-smp 8
flag.

GPU is definitely worth it. Hardly affects the CPU performance and will give you around 7000 ppd

:welcome: to T32 NV!! Pull up a seat, grab a  (by the way, I gotta beat harlam357 to this one, new guy stocks the fridge :p), and enjoy your stay. You will find us to be a friendly bunch, and we are always willing to help out. If you have any more questions, feel free to post them up. I don't personally know too much about Folding in native Linux, but there are quite a few people here that do.

Read up on the effects of running -bigadv WUs. Large up and downloads, lots of memory used. ~20,000 ppd @ 3.8 Ghz, if you earn the bonus by turning in 10 straight WUs within the preferred deadline.

Hey guys, I'm having trouble uploading my results to the work server.

Also, if anyone has an easy-to-follow GPU2 in wine for Ubuntu 9.04 64bit, I'd love to see it. There's some information out there that seems to conflict just a little, and some of isn't easy to understand for a low-intermediate level linux user such as myself. Time is a valuable commodity, so if it's not too much of a pain a decent link would be well appreciated. If not, I'll wrestle it out when I have more time.

ChasR - I set the option for acceptable WU size to 'big', anything else I need to do to get that going? Interestingly enough, I'm running at 3.8GHz :)

It's a blast watching my computer burn through these WUs. Temps hovering around 70C, they go up a little when ambient rises (I have some ambient temperature issues, in a college dorm...). I can probably drop my Vcore a little too, which I'll do probably in a week or two.

Dangit!!! :bang head You did beat me to it!!! :p ...and after last night my fridge could use a restock. :D

:welcome: to Team 32 NV!

Alright, so now that I've been going a few days and just got the GPU client working, I have a couple basic questions.

How do I run the -bigadv WUs? I have the passkey, I've entered it, I'm running -advmethods, and I have the work unit size set to big, but I'm still getting normal WUs. What have I missed?

What are safe folding temps for my GTX 260? After just a couple minutes folding it's already pushing into the upper 70s, fully stock (stock speeds, stock cooling). CPU is hanging out in the low-mid 70s right now, and it's a little warmer in the room than I'd like it to be (intake temperature probe currently reading almost 25C), but unfortunately it's this warm here often.

Provided I'm within a decent temperature range for my card/if I get better cooling soon, what do I get the best ppd boost: temperature increase from overclocking?

I still need to fine-tune my 920's overclock, but I'm really busy. Realistically I probably won't get to it until Christmas.

I'm loving folding with this rig though. I'll pass a couple years' worth of folding on my P4 within a couple weeks. Good stuff.

You have -bigadv in the command line as well? I'm not really sure how that works, since I'm only running a Core 2. PM sneakysnowman, he's using a i7 under Linux and utilizing the -bigadv

get out quicK!!!

This folding stuff is worse than crack!!!

Once you start it never stops, first you start on the regular client, then that's not enough and you get smp going, and then its gpu2 then farms...I'm telling you you have to be careful :p

No seriously, I'm kidding, great to have you guys on the team, but it is addictive

Nick
