What does it mean for a motherboard to post?

I often hear about a motherboard posting. From what I can gather, it seems to be related to booting.

POST = Power On Self Test.

Ah ha. Thanks.

I think I see something that might be considered a self test when I boot up my current computer, a Dell Pentium 4.
