I have a problem with slow torrents on my network. I have a smoothwall firewall/router and computers hooked up to it via switches and a wireless ap. When I am downloading using my dsl line which is 5mbps my speeds rarely go over 10KB/s-30KB/s even if speedtest.net shows my speed to be good at 4.8-4.9mbps.

If I tether my computer to my iPhone it will download as much as torrents as I want and max out my 3G connection at 150-180KB/s.

I am using uTorrent as my client and when I am connected to my network the icon on it is green meaning it has good connection and no firewall issues and i even checked using a website to see if port 43833 is accesible and it is.

When I use my 3G tethering it also is green.

What makes my home network download slower?

From what I understand when torrenting, you should always use a static ip on the box running the client. Port forwarding if necessary on your firewall/router. I use tixati as client, which is both windows and linux portable, and do not even need to port forward, but I only have a router & no firewall other than software. You could also try using magnet links as they are peer-peer only and use no trackers at all.

Connected it directly to my modem and I got speeds of over 500KB/s so I checked out my smoothie and it was my QOS settings that was causing it.
