I just built a new system. Q6600 OC to 3GZ, with a stock (not OC) XFX 8600 GT. Granted it's not an 8800[xxx] but still, isn't a score of <5000 kind of low for my system specs? Most of the tests seem to average 10-15 frames or less! Seems really odd. Does anyone here have a comparable setup and has run the free/base 3dMark06 test?

CPU: INTEL C2Q Q6600 2.4 S775 SLACR (@3.00GHZ)
VGA: XFX PVT84JUDF3 8600GT 256MB R (stock)
RAM: DDR2 2GB PC6400 DUAL OCZ CROSSFIRE CERTIFIED (4-4-4-15)
HD: 500G WD 7000 RPM, 16M, SATA2 (WD5000AAKS)
MB: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R 775
HS: BIG TYPHOON CL-P0114 TT RT
PSU: COOLMAX|M-500 500W RT

umm nope thats probably pretty close to being right... 8600 series is pretty much a joke IMO... a 7900gs will do the same / better than a 8600gt so ya your right on target.

Well with the current setup i have I scored 5500, so yes that 8600GT is a joke. Your best bet would've been a 8800GTS 320mb. That 8600 you have isn't gonna cut it.

Oh, btw Welcome to O/C Forums! :welcome:

I see. Ok, thanks. From you sig, it would seem like I need to upgrade to an 8800gts and overclokk to 630core, 2000mem to achieve those ~11K 3d06 scores.
Would overclocking my 8600GT (with perhaps a better cooler) potentially double my 3d06 numbers? In your case it's almost 4 times as high... except that 3300 pts looks really low even for a stock 8800 gts.

BTW, whats a "VF900"?

From you sig:
GFX --- Evga 8800gts! Evga 7600gt KO w/ VF900
3d06 -- 11091pts @ 630/2000 ----- 3300pts @ stock clocks

I've done over 5600 on 3D06 w/my 7900GS (630/906) and stock 64x2 2.4GHz. Looks like you might want to step up that 8600. At the very, very least the 8600GTS but really...

+1 for 8800GTS 320

Edit: VF900 is a 3rd party cooler for graphics cards made by Zalman. I have one too :D

VF900 is a VGA cooler made by zalman Linky :)

Hi Thorin!

I seriously doubt you would double the score just by ocing it. At least from my experience of overclocking my cards, which have similar performance. If you want to get into the higher numbers, you're going to have to replace the card. Or get another and go sli.

:welcome: By the way, let your cousins Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Balin, Dwalin, Ori, Dori, Nori, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur all know they are welcome too.

@ nd4spdbh2 is that a 320 MB or a 640? Those are some nice clocks! I have my core up to 620 on my 320, I hope my memory will go that high!!!! Got 180 MHz left to get there!

Ok, dumb (noob) question. If I want to go SLI, do I need a new Mobo? My current mobo has one long pci-e slot (express 16), the others are small (express 1?). Does that mean I'm SOL or else how do I achieve PCI? My mobo is: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R

the 3300 pts is the 3dmark score with my 7600gt in my htpc... a VF900 is a vga cooler... and to get 11091pts i needed to clock my 640mb 8800gts to 630/2000 and my E6600 to 3.4ghz.

Yea, your mobo doesn't support SLI. I would suggest however that you just sell the card and get a faster card like the 8800GTS, SLI doesn't make sense with midrange cards imho.

I agree with you totally. If you are having to buy a new mobo to do SLi it makes even less sense. Just step up a card or 2, sell your old one and forget SLi, it will be cheaper in the long run.

I would suggest considering whether the 8600 GT will do what you need it to do. I wouldn't really consider trying for a higher 3dmark score a valid reason to upgrade unless you are getting into competative benchmarking; if you're not and only going to be playing a few games here and there casually, then 3dmark is little more than a point of reference of how well your PC can run modern games with all the bells and whistles enabled. Are you a heavy or a casual gamer? Do you have to have a high resolution (higher than 1280 x 1024) and all the extras on? If you answer no to those questions, an 8600 GT may be just fine for you, considering the best price I've seen in the 8800 GTS 320 is around $259 after rebate, while the 8600GT's can currently be had for less than $100 after rebate. They're a great mid-range card for the price, even if you don't want to mod it. If you look around the volt modding section on this site, you'll find some instructions on volt-modding the 8600's. They can Over clock like crazy given the proper voltage and cooling. There's a few on this site that can get 7k-7.5k in 3dmark06 after V-modding. Even if you don't volt-mod, you can probably squeeze an extra 600 or 700 points out of that card by over clocking it and probably a few hundred more by Over clocking your CPU.

I disagree with you Burninate. If he is looking for any sort of longevity the 8800 would be a much better investment. I have a feeling CryTek's new engine will destroy an 8600. Heck even lower end 8800 may not survive too well.

Well that wouldn't really matter if the guy mostly plays Civ4 or WoW. I couldn't care less about 3dmark. I think Burninate's response was very well reasoned.

Ive still got big love for my 7900gs 6048 points in 3Dm06

i feel ya man when i had my 7900gt KO 512mb, i absolutly loved it. I had a vf900 on it and it ran super cool and hardly dumped much heat into my case. to be honest i never ocd it. i only had it for less than 90 days as i stepped up to a 8800gts. but i was able to grab 5500pts at stock clocks (540/1600 i think) at 3.0ghz on my e6600... IMO i would have bought a 7900 series card rather than a 8600gt cus they r round same price.

What i would do (speaking to the OP) is simply use evga's awseome stepup program and simply pay a lilbit more for a 8800gts 320mb. but its ur call.

EDIT : nvm you have a suckie XFX

Thank you everyone for your replies! I'll probably stick with my current card (my wife plays Railroads and AoEIII) therefore I don't need a better card I guess... at least until Crysis is released =). I was just concerned that my results were "way below" the norm for my setup, which appears not to be the case. I'll check out the VGA OC and VoltModing forums to learn how to do that if I ever decided to squeeze more juice out of my card. Thanks again!

Actually they're still below the norm ;)

I have an e2140 @ 3.2Ghz and a 8600GT. I get over 5000 even with the 8600 at stock, and just below 5900 with it overclocked.

Your Quad should trounce my CPU even at the higher clock in the CPU section, so it still seems a bit low in all honesty.
