Hi,

I'm planning my first build and I think I will only need 8gb of memory for now but I may want to up that to 16gb in the future.
I'm thinking of having 2x4gb for now and then when I want more I can move up to 4x4gb.

Is there a disadvantage to 4x4gb over 2x8gb?

I could get 2x8gb now if I really wanted but I'd rather put that money to something else for now and add another 2x4gb later on, unless there is significant downside to this.

Thanks

No downside to getting the 2x4 now. Most motherboards only support dual-channel RAM, so your bandwidth will be maximized with only 2 sticks. 4 sticks will make no difference. If your board happens to support tri or quad-channel memory, then 4x4 would theoretically be 1.5 or 2 times as fast!
