How do you do everyone?
I was having a problem I have never confronted before and I was researching online. However, I still could not find the answer and my friend recommended me this site that there are numerous helpful and kind experts here so I joined the forum. I was hoping that experts or anybody can help me figure out this problem that I cannot update my windows and any other programs that are installed. Also, I was hoping that someone could take a look at the log generated from hijackthis if there are other problems as well. Thank you very much.

Heh, you are going to have to tell more then that. What is the problem, what happens when you try to update, what have you tried/how have you tried to fix it, how old is the windows, is it legit, etc.

Just off the top of my head..
If you cannot update any program, that sounds like either your computer wont let you do any updates and thus Virus. Or you do the update and it doesn't stick, which could be virus, random ****tyness or your computer is has deep freeze or something like that. It could also be that you don't have permissions to write to the folders. Although how that happened.. beats me.

I am sorry for not being too clear, but just stating my problem. The window is Vista and I simply cannot update any of the programs. For example, my automatic windows update stopped working and I have tried to update manually it still would not work so do my programs. All the programs and windows are legitimate. There certainly no problem with internet connection. I thought that it would be a virus or ad-ware though my AVG and ad-aware are not catching anything. Please let me know if you need any more information and thank you very much for trying to help.

What exactly happens when you try to use Windows Update, or update your programs (and which programs specifically)? Check the Event Viewer logs for any critical errors related to Windows Update or any specific programs (Start | Type event viewer in the Start Search field, and hit ENTER). When you open Event Viewer and expand Critical, Application, or System logs - under "Windows Logs" (or look under "Summary of Administrative Events--> Event Type--> Critical)... double click the specific error so it opens in the Summary Page Events window. Next click on Copy--> Copy Details as Text in the RH pane, and paste the contents of the ClipBoard in this thread.

First of all, I really appreciate your help. I have followed your instruction and it seems that there are few errors it shows.

This is what I get for WindowsUpdate problem:

Currently, WindowsUpdate, Windows Defender and AVG Internet security cannot update. Also, recently downloaded programs that require updates cannot be updated as well. I just feel that something( could be a virus or "something" that controls the update on the computer) is preventing me from updating. And, when I try to update Windows, it says "Failed: 1 updates and "Error(s) found: Code 80240016 Windows Update is currently installing other updates. Please try again in a few minutes." However, I tried to update after 20 minutes more than 30 times.

Download Spybot S&D here...

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

... and if you're running the x64 version of Vista, make sure to run the program as administrator. The first time you run it, a wizard will guide you through setting it up and updating it. Make sure to update it prior to "Checking for problems" (found under Spybot-S&D | Search and Destroy button).

You might also want to run Malwarebytes...

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

... download the free trial. Also download and run the conficker worm tool from Symantec here (under FAQ):

http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=us_ghp_link_conficker_worm

If your PC is infected w/ the worm, you probably won't be able to access the above Symantec site.

Chances are if you can't update you have a virus, that's the first thing a virus will do is keep you from getting to Windows Update, followed by preventing you from getting to any anti-virus sites.

I would follow the steps that redduc suggested, I prefer malwarebytes, it helped clean my friends computer of a trojan not to long ago.

As for the hijack this log, I really didn't see anything that jumped out at me, other than you have a crap load of programs starting at start-up that can use all your resources up, but nothing major.

If you have trouble getting to one of the anti-virus sites let us know, maybe someone can post the file somewhere for you to download it.

Oh and....welcome to the forums. :)

i have had this problem before, there are many reasons for it to happen, one of them is the viri, and another one of the most common refusals just takes a minor registry fix (somehow fubared, but not by a viri) and you may be good to go...

i found several solutions to the problem by just using this search string:::

Windows Update Not Working

give it a try, I got many hits, this is a rather simple problem to fix....

I remember a while back having this problem. I applied a simple registry fix, walla, updateness started working again.....

laterzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......................
