I have a very bizarre problem happening with my computer, and I think it's malware related. I found today that I couldn't browse any url from stackoverflow.com with the consecutive words "javascript" and "exploit". Just "javascript" works. Just "exploit" works. A word between those two will work. Those two consecutively will not. That part is in all browsers. I found in chrome that it was actually handing me a 302 error. I verified it with these two URLs:

http://stackoverflow.com/search?q=javascript+exploit
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/381171/help-me-understand-this-javascript-exploit

Now, here's the weird part, and it's only happening with firefox. I tried searching for "javascript non exploit" on stack overflow. It took me here:

http://stackoverflow.com/search?q=javascript+non+exploit

That page loaded fine. However, if I try to modify the URL in the address bar, it changes itself back. It's not doing that in any other browser. I ran malwarebytes and found nothing. I also ran hijackthis. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, but here's the log:

My hosts file looks clean as a whistle too. Just what the hell is going on here?

Firefox and duckduckgo search for javascript + exploit and trying to go to this link > stackoverflow.com/questions/381171/help-me-understand-thi.. sets my AV off saying there was an attack.

Other hits in that search criteria do not all set off AV and actually the links work okay.
RGone...

Pretty sure it is Avast. When I try to go to those links, I get a popup saying it was blocked and the page doesn't load with a "Connection Reset" page.

Well, before looking at your replies, I went and did a system restore. The first link works now, and the URL changing nonsense doesn't happen anymore. The last link still doesn't work in any browser.

Also, firefox lost every last one of my bookmarks during the restore. Did I mention the restore point was only 8 hours ago? Oh well, I have bookmark backups - the .json files. Any idea how to import that?

Control+shift+B

import and backup - restore - choose file

You sir are a genius I have been trying to find a way to backup my bookmarks in FF but does it back up the bookmark toolbar as well, its that what I really want to back-up

Yes it does, I always keep a recent bookmarks backup just in case. Every time I've restored a .json file my bookmarks toolbar is populated too.

Make sure to have a custom Firefox user folder in a place where you can back it up. I restore a backup with every new version of Firefox, like today v27 is out, I restored my old backed up user Folder I made when v26 was out, then started Firefox, updated add-ons then saved the newly updated folder until v28 comes out.

Then way when, not if, when something goes wrong, I can easily isolate the culprit.

I also use this add-on which allows me to have a single system wide Favorites *folder* for bookmarks, which is shared by Internet Explorer too so single Favorites folder not just for multiple operating systems on the machine, but also for all browsers on those OS, including IE:
