I'll be ordering some parts for a new computer in a day or so, and I've just been going through the hardware to make sure everything is in order. I decided to see what other motherboards are out there and ran across a significantly cheaper AM3 board that appears to be the same

MSI 790GX-G65 AM3 - $130

GIGABYTE GA-MA770T - $86

I want to go with the MSI (my initial decision) but if both are relatively identical (minus an extra PCI-E on the MSI) would it be smarter to go with Gigabyte?

Alright, upon further investigation, the MSI has onboard video and sound. So...both of those paired with the extra PCI-E makes up the price increase?

It's a 770 chipset versus a 790GX chipset. The 770 will be ever-so-slightly slower, and probably not clock as well either.

What CPU was going to be run on this?

why amd? with the cpus available and the performance available, i see no reason to buy amd

Because some people don't like supporting a monopoly
also, AMD is cheaper and in games and most other things you will not notice a difference between an i7 and a PII
also, PII's run MUCH cooler than i7

Id check out the Foxconn A7DA -S 3.0 790GX board. The AM2+ variant is very nice, my friend has one and it clocks his 8750BE very nicely. Foxconn is kinda like a sleeper brand, they do very well and are stable, and their high end boards are always top notch. It is also $6 less than the ugly color scheme MSI board to, and reminds me of NF3 and NF4 board colors....ah those were the days.

I am a fan of gigabytes AM2/3 boards. Make sure it uses either the 790FX or 790GX northbridge, and SB750 southbridge, and you should be great. I would really only go with Asus, MSI, DFI, or Gigabyte. Stay away from asrock/foxconn/biostar. They are cheaper because they use lower quality parts. I still find gigabyte to be the best quality. I have used asus, msi, and gigabyte am2/3 boards and found the gigabyte to be the best.

Best Computer Motherboard

I can concur with Malakai about the brand of computer motherboard that you are looking to buy from. I have had sporadic success with companies like Asrock, but overall it is not worth the risk or the money to take the chance.

I do enjoy your enthusiasm for the AMD computer cpu. I feel the same way myself, but I can't ignore the facts. At least they got fined by EU for trying to push AMD out of the market on some deals over seals. I wonder where the 1.4 billion is going?

I don't ignore the facts either. :)
i7 is faster than Phenom 2, some things more than others. However the only actual taxing thing my comp does is gaming, a P2/C2Q/i7 all run everything else I do just fine. At games the P2 does remarkably well. At low res with the cpu doing all the work the i7 dominates no doubt, but at real playable settings the P2 does as well or sometimes better in my eyes!
I say better in that P2 is notorious for having a higher min framerate in games than i7, and I find the min to be more important than max. I use vsync so as long as my sustained fps is 45-60@1920x1200 I am quite happy. I find the occasional slowdown to be much more annoying then a slightly lowered avg fps.
In actual use I definitely notice the amazing lack of slowdowns in my games, I say amazing considering my video card was 105 new and 85-90 nowadays.

If I was loaded would I have gone with a fully loaded i7-920 box (due to how well they all oc, Id still take a d0 920 over the pricier options) with the best mobo and triple channel ddr3-1600 or better. Unfortunately I live in the real world; Fortunately AMD is there to hook me up with something almost as good for a significantly lower cost. Not just the CPU cost either, AMD went out of their way to make sure the Phenom 2's could use ddr2 or 3, so people lookin for max perf can blaze out on ddr3 while the rest of us take advantage of the amazing price of 2gb ddr2-1066 sticks!

So yeah I am kind of excited about amd lately, they seem to have really tailored their business model to taking top of the line performance to the masses. Throughout most of AMD vs Intel history, intel has usually had the top dog flagship, but AMD always has something great for those of us who haven't been so lucky financially!
Also just the existence of amd and intel, and how their price wars and competition drive innovation while pushing prices down constantly, is proof that competitive free market capitalism is the way to go for society.
Everyone is so obsessed with the president and powerful centralized government (while hating on capitalism daily), it's nice to have flat out proof that competitive free market capitalism (computer market shining example) is far superior to having a socialist government agency determining the price and distribution of goods & services (uhm, real estate, cars, energy, banking & finance).

Laissez-faire ftw, if you are in the know you realize this, for both the poor and the rich and everyone else. Capitalism cured hunger/starvation and elevated the common person up from being a peasant barely earning enough to feed themselves & family, though most of our history books teach it with a different flavor now (like greed = evil, despite the fact it is normal and healthy to want the best for yourself and those you love, and with capitalism you can work towards the best for yourself and help society as a whole as well).

Sorry got a little OT there. I am a STRONG supporter of free market capitalism though, and we are computer enthusiasts so we know how good it works better than most as far as constantly resulting in decreasing prices and increased power/quality. I like to get other comp people to think about this when possible, as our society really REALLY needs more people that understand and appreciate capitalism for what it is, simply free people making their own choices about what they do with their cash and their lives (not rule by the evil greedy richest as most socialists believe) :) I dont do econ rants often thankfully heh

I think some people missed this
After playing through several levels on each platform, even with the improved performance of the Q9550 after switching to the 9.3 driver set, we thought the Phenom II 940/720BE offered a better overall gaming experience in Crysis Warhead. Are we going to say those three words again? Our therapist advised us not to hold our feelings in as they would eventually manifest and be channeled into a bad review for someone. So without further adieu, Smoother Game Play, Smoother Game Play.

That feels better, but all joking aside, we simply experienced better player movement and weapon control during heavy action sequences with our Phenom II processors compared to the Q9550 platform. This was especially true if we were running background applications (IM, File Transfers, AntiVirus, etc.) and especially if CPU usage was over 90%, the Phenom II system never stuttered or gave us a slight pause between level transitions like the Q9550 (editor - Sounds like an SSD review).

It might not be noticeable to everyone and at first we thought it was a placebo effect, but doing a blind test with an A/B box always lead us to the Phenom II.
something malakai was trying to say

You might not believe this but c'mon its AT praising AMD against Intel.

Numbers arent the only bet ;)
And green is so much better than blue :santa: (reason I miss DFI LT boards compared to the DK ones :( )

Phenom II

Well I am sold once again. Now I have to find a game that I really need this power for again. Personally waiting for FFXIV so I can waste endless amounts of time.

I have just recently purchased the gigabyte 790fx and I had a DFI back on the 939 socket and I am more impressed with is board. It is AM2+/AM3 and I am running a P2 940. This board has a ton of OC features, and heat pipes on all the chips. I purchased this board going off of what I read on this forum and with gigabyte so far on this chipset, knowone has any complaints. Also I am going to have to agree, that I too will not support the monopoly of intel. In the past 15 years, I have owned 2 intel chips and 4 AMD, both intel chips died on me and some of my AMD chips I sold off and are still running to this day, even after I abused them.
