Dual Xeons, ECC, and OC??? Is that even possible? They're certainly listing it as such. I've got a tingling feeling this could be my "ultimate" system, as long as I don't look at the price of it or anything worthy of going on it.

Side note: I did own an Asus mobo with OC dual Xeons in the distant past. I can't remember exact model, but it took Prestonia Xeons and I had a pair at 2.4 GHz each. Using a socket link mod, I could bus OC them to 3.2 GHz. Yes, I had 2c4t in 2002-2004-ish? The Xeons were apparently released in 2002, and I remember putting a 6800 Ultra in the system that was released in 2004.

You're likely talking about the Asus PC-DL. I built a bunch of setups with them back in the day and still have one running with dual 1.6 LV Xeons @ 3 GHz. The best Xeons were the Prestonia 2.4 GHz M0 steppings which could OC from 3.2 to 3.5 GHz.

Here's a link to the massive thread on OC'ing this motherboard over a 2CPU:

This is a server board, not a workstation board lol.

It has a Lattice CPLD for power and reset handling/monitoring, along with a Nuvoton proc to handle management lol. You could easily integrate this into a server farm and people wouldn't notice the difference (except IT, because **** all those management tools).

Also, you can OC any Intel proc, it depends on what they put into the BIOS/Firmware. Most server CPUs can be overclocked (and some are based on vendor) but BIOS doesn't give you the options.

What OC possibilities are there realistically with Xeons? To my understanding, they're fsb locked, and you might have some extra turbo bins above Intel spec but in general I thought there wasn't really much scope. Take the 2011-3, the only ones I've heard of doing it involved reverting to older microcode before they locked out multiplier locks. Kinda like multicore enhancement on consumer mobos.

Edit:

From Anandtech https://www.anandtech.com/show/1196...orkstation-motherboard-dual-xeon-overclocking
We have been told by Intel that none of the Xeons are overclockable, which usually means that the CPU multiplier is not adjustable. ASUS hasn't released any details on the overclocking capabilities, however there are two ICS chips on the board which are usually attached to motherboards that offer significant base clock frequency adjustment, so our current thoughts are it will be using BCLK adjustments for overclocks.

I have a Evga x58 le board with a 2.5ghz 4 core Xeon, i was able to push it to 3.7ghz easily (multiplier locked out). i feel OC two xeon maybe harder to push more out, but hey two xeons OCed
