in fact my USE flags were really really small in order to cut down on the chance of user error
something like gnome -kde dvd cdr gtk -qt3

FYI, Direct 3D cannot be ran under DOS. That's 32-bit Windows. (Windows 95 and later)

DirectX was introduced with Windows 95.
