Just broke a blade on my 80x25mm Thermaltake Smart Fan 2.

What's new, what should I get?

Thanks, my system:

well it depends on what you're using it for, but the best i've found is the arctic cooling af8. the drawback is that it can only be mounted as an exhaust or, presumably, on top of a heatsink, but cannot be mounted as a front intake.

truth. i just bought 2 of them of case-mods.com and i got a discount for buying 2 of em. but its cheaper to buy them off here http://svcompucycle.stores.yahoo.net/acf8.html. but i got them off case-mods so i could save on shipping because i had to buy a gpu cooler.

and they're not kidding when they say silent. the ONLY way how i can hear them is by stick my ear right next to them. and even then i can't hear the fan. its just the air wizzing past.

Looks? Hmm.

I had a fan that was
20.55 CFM at 1300 rpm 17 dB
75.7 CFM at 4800 rpm 48 dB

before I decided to stick a pen in it to temporarily stop it to see if the high pitched fan noise was coming from the new PSU fan. D'oh that was stupid.

Anyway this fan you're suggesting is
28.0 CFM 2000 RPM 20.0 dB(A), hardly a decent replacement.

All right, I'll look at SVC and elsewhere, then tell you what I chose.

Right now I'm looking at

80x25mm Thermaltake Smart Fan 2
20.55 CFM at 1300 rpm 17 dB
75.7 CFM at 4800 rpm 48 dB

vs.

90x25mm Thermaltake 90x25mm Smart Fan A2017
24.6 CFM at 1300 rpm 17 dB
78.7 CFM at 4000 rpm 48 dB

I think I discovered why I had a 40C case temps for years.

I connected my case fans to PSU connectors marked "Fan Only."

If you connect them there, the PSU "regulates" their speed according to temperature. Bad deal as it prevented me from reaching higher overclocks...

I would go with one of the fans below. They've treated me well. You need an 80mm, right?

http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/sadedcpeace8.html <- you can find a better price

I've owned all of the above fans (lower speed models) and have been very happy with them. I'm using a Sanyo Denki in my side panel, and a Panaflo in the back of my case. The Deltas, being 38mm, will have higher pressure and would do very well on a heatsink. They will probably produce a bit more motor noise per CFM than the Panaflo and SD though.

Yeah, the Deltas are great for major overclocking but at 65 dBA... wow that's loud.

That one Delta has 60.03 CFM @ 5000 RPM, 45.5 dBA,

The Panaflos are
46.9 CFM @ 3450 RPM, 38.2 dBA,
and
53 CFM @ 4600 RPM, 45 dBA,

Can you post why that's better than

20.55 CFM at 1300 rpm 17 dB
variable all the way to
75.7 CFM at 4800 rpm 48 dB
(Smart Fan 2)

or

24.6 CFM at 1300 rpm 17 dB
variable all the way to
78.7 CFM at 4000 rpm 48 dB
(Smart Fan A2017)

sorry, i didn't notice that you were looking to replace the fan on your heatsink in the original post, but then you didn't indicate whether you wanted silent and reasonable performance or raw power.

in any case, it's common knowledge that thermaltake lies about their fans' noise level and cfm. at least with delta and panaflo you have a credible estimate of what you can expect.

if you're thinking about going with a larger fan, the delta 92x38mm 3-blade high speed will knock the socks off that thermaltake and undervolts nicely (I used to have one on an xp-90 a while back).

BUT fans aren't that expensive so honestly your best bet is to narrow the field and try out a few until you find the one that meets your own standards for power/noise. then write a review for us. :p

Yes, I seem to remember about those fan specs being measured differently now.

Thanks for opinions.

those are loud, but hey tahts what you get with 80mm....i had a Titan vanessa s-type and it did the job for me with only 47cfm @29dBA
but maybe it disppensated heat good because of the heatpipes..its not really expensive either at 40 euros

I can garuntee the Panaflos and Deltas will push more air with less noise than the TT. Use a fan controller and turn it down to an acceptable noise.

All right, plans to purchase Thermaltake canceled.

Thermaltake is known for making really poor performing Socket A heatsinks that lots of people bought because they though they were buying quality Thermalrights.

Will try to buy Panaflo or Delta instead.

The only TT product I've bought and enjoyed has been my Big Typhoon.

I had a blue-led TT 120mm as an exhaust for awhile but while it pushed alot of air it was much louder than advertised (luckily I bought it for cheap). I replaced it with a no-name SVC ball-bearing fan that I've been much happier with, and it went to become a side intake on my fileserver.
