lol well there's your answer. There's meant to be only microns not millimeters there. It's not to put a spacer inbetween the parts, just fill in the parts that don't touch if you hold it metal to metal.

Grain of rice sized thing of AS5 in the middle only, the pressure from the heatsink will press it out evenly - as per instructions on AS website if it's got the heatspreader on the chip.

It's all about how little you can use.
