Hi,

I am thinking to buy a new computer this black friday and need your help.

I am looking for a small, quiet config and i am trying to keep the price below 800$, max top 1000$ with monitor.
I already have the keyboard, mouse and S.O.

I am going to use it a lot for working and sometimes to play some games. I am not the gamer i was but i would like to enjoy some of the new games.

MBO: Not sure how much i must spend. I only need one that can be overclocked in the future. This is where i need more help.

Processor: Intel for sure. One that could be overclocked in the future is also important.

Hard disk:
One SSD for the SO (128Gb) and one HDD for data. 1Tb should be ok as i have some external usb disks.

RAM: 2x4Gb will be more than enough.

GPU: something not too expensive but enough to play some games. Something that i could replace it after two years if i start to play more often. I do not like to make SLI or similar.

PSU: i think that 650 will be ok thinking also that i would like to use it in the future. Will be better to go for a 750?

Coolers: now i am not going to OC at all. So i prefer to have something silent than other thing. But in the future (1-2 years) i would like to OC it, so maybe is it worth to invest on something i could use later.

Case: Size is important. I know that when i go for OC i will need more space inside but for now i prefer to keep it small and silent.

Monitor: something around 20-26" and cheap.

I am not sure if i forget something.

Also i would like to know if there is any laptop that could compete with a computer like this investing like 200$ more. I will stay here 2 years, but after that, mobility could be something important. I do not think that laptop exists, but tell me if you know about it.

And about the shopping, i was thinking to buy everything on amazon, but i am not sure if is it possible to find better prices somewhere else online. I live in Orlando, if that helps.

Thank you very much for your help.

Ángel

Well, quiet PCs is something I've done a great deal of research into... check out the build I'm going to do around the new years.

Of course that's outside your price range, but I think we can get into it. Try this.

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V LK ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($124.24 @ NCIX US)
Memory: Mushkin Silverline 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($32.66 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($103.99 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: Asus Radeon HD 7770 2GB Video Card ($146.06 @ NCIX US)
Case: BitFenix Merc Alpha ATX Mid Tower Case ($39.98 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 620W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($83.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Optical Drive: LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer ($69.98 @ Outlet PC)
Monitor: Asus VE247H 23.6" Monitor ($169.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $1040.87

should be pretty quiet overall... you can replace the GPU when you're ready for something better. The rest of the system should stand up well, and overclock nicely. For now, i just left the stock intel cooler, you'd probably want to replace that when you start to oc.

Some questions:
CPU: is it worth to go to the i7 3770K instead of the i5?
PSU: I am considering also this one: OCZ ZT Series 550W Fully-Modular 80PLUS Bronze High Performance, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341050

Motherboard:
Asus P8Z77-V or ASRock Z77 Extreme4?
Any other options to consider?

RAM: What do you think about this Ram?
SAMSUNG 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

I do not need an optical drive. I have not use one since 2009. :D

Thanks!

Unless you need the HT the 370k offers over the 3570k, I wouldnt.

Both mobos are fine. I think the Ex4 is cheaper.

Ram is ram. Looks good to me.

PSU is ok as well.

No, I really waste money in my build going with an i7... part of why i did is because I wanted "great" performance out of a 65W chip... which if you're going fanless makes some sense. Since you're not going fanless, you'll be fine dropping down to an i5, using a 77w chip, and getting about the same performance as my reference build for $100 less

I like Seasonic because of it's quality... go with this if you are comfortable with it.

no problem with you going ASRock.

RAM: What do you think about this Ram?
SAMSUNG 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

you probably won't notice the difference between RAM... it seems ram types have more impact on system speed when you're using an onchip GPU... (like on a trinity) then they do for much else. (there is impact in overclocking too).

This is what i have now:

MOB:
Considering Asrock Z77 EX4 or Asus P8Z77-V
CPU:
i5-3570K
Cooler:
Not sure if i will need something or use the one that come with the cpu.

PSU:
OCZ ZT Series 550W Fully-Modular 80PLUS Bronze High Performance, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341050

For the rest i am still investigating what is best. Next step: SSD disks and RAM.

Thanks again.

the 6870 would be a bit better of a card... of course if your goal is to eventually xfire it, the whole 68xx line is being discontinued... so you might need to get a 2nd card soon if you want to take advantage of xfire.

I chose a 7770 because of your budget concerns... it's a high performing one, but still an underpowered card overall. in the end i went with a card you could xfire, and which was quiet in general, and not too much money. so there was some upgrade possibilities in the future.

Up to you on this count.

I am not thinking to xfire on the future, so that is not a problem.
The point is that 6870 is just 10$ more and it looks like much better Card than the hd7770.
unless i started to play a lot again, i am not sure i will need to upgrade it on 12-16 months.

and a 7850 is just $10 more... the 6870 is a good card, and cheap, and getting cheaper as they phase it out. if you're NOT considering xfire, then i'd get a 7850. with all the gear you're buying you might as well as get a pcie 3.0 video card (not the 6xxx series); so that if you do xfire later you know you're getting the most of the gear.

The 7770 and 6870 are nearly the same card, the 7850 is a good bit more powerful of a card. It also comes with 2GB of vRAM, and there are some games that can exceed 1GB of vRAM usage on a single monitor.

I think your money is much better spend on a better video card than the gold rated PSU. This machine is only going to draw about 320W or so.

I am really considering the invest on the card. At the end is not going to change the total so much. But i want to keep it below 200 and closer to the original limit of 150$.
Any suggestion on which 7850?

The PSU is really the cheapest on 550W :) i choose it because the price with the rebate cannot be better: 59$.

Thanks

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028 ($29 after deals?)

that is a good psu u linked, but here are a couple more options. I'd go with at LEAST a 400w imho. lots of options, just stick with a good name. but newegg is running MAD deals right now so who knows...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121651

decent deals on the 7850s, newegg promo and black friday might offer an additional promo code. all 7850s appear to be the same speeds, so i dont really see the big difference. just get a 2gb vram.

Yes, that is what i am going to do.

Well, now is time to wait for the offers! :D

Modular? Sheesh...it's only a 500W PSU. There aren't that many cables. I can understand on a 750W+ model...

Extreme3 is nearly the same board and comes with a free set of RAM.

You also sounded like you're only gonna keep this machine for two years and probably not upgrade it, you don't need anywhere near 550W in that case.
