My friend has acquired a GTX 980ti and his q6600 is not keeping up (surprise....not)

Goal for this build is to not bottle neck GTX 980ti and game the best. Running 1080p monitor.

Would like to keep it around $500, but can spend $1,000. Even the cheap ryzen 5 build below would not bottleneck the card at all (right??)

goals:

Gaming
-battle field 5 maybe
-Insurgency sandstorm
-csgo (lol)
-SCII (lol)
-l4d2 (lol)

needs
mobo
proc
ram
case
fans for case
heatsink for ryzen 7 option

Quick newegg shopping and I came up with this.

with this cooler https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

or

With 7 and cooler he has $52.30 left for a case. Not sure if spending the extra on a nice cooler and more threads is worth it for future proofing.

with ryzen 5 build he has $130.29 left for case and fans

Please let me know if you need any more info. Thanks.

What is your target refresh rate? A Ryzen 7 2700X professor will bottleneck a 1080TI at 1080P but not severely. It still gets in the hundred of frames per second.

I’m not not certain how a Ryzen will handle a 980TI. It will probably be adaquate as long as your goal is a frame rate around 60FPS. 144FPS isn’t going to happen even with a 2700X.

A 1000 series will do nicely but if you can I’d try to get a 2600X. It is pretty much the same speed as a 2700X just minus two cores and four threads.

These are my thought for roughly a $500 budget and the needs and goals listed.

The 2600 is a very very capable processor for his needs and coupled with the cooler listed easily can be overclocked to 4.0-4.2 GHz. The RAM listed has many reviews from Ryzen users that I've read stating they have been able to overclock to 3200 MHz+ with tighter than the rated timings without adjust the voltage and is one of the cheapest 16GB dual channel DDR4 kits I've seen yet. The motherboard is a very capable product from a reliable company with the ability to overclock the CPU and RAM. And the case is a great bargain for the product and includes 2 fans already and the 2 additional fans on the AIO would provide for a good airflow.

Thank you all for your input. Looks like my friend has decided to visit Micro Center tomorrow afternoon. I have this lined up. Hope they can price match newegg or amazon and save a few bucks.

$449
-$30 for mobo/proc comob
$419
+$39 (tax)
= $458

Then any case he fancies.
