SOLVED Can't promote Server 2012 to child DC

I've got a Server 2008 R2 DC as the root DC, and now I'm trying to add a Server 2012 child DC to the domain, but I keep getting the following error message in Server 2012 while I'm trying to promote it:

So you have just a single DC in your domain right now? Is the 2012 server in the same network as your other DC? Sounds like replication problems...

Did the object actually get created? What does dcdiag show when you run it?

I gave up and used a Server 2008 R2 DC instead and that worked. Thanks.
