Well, while most people are getting new consoles and new games for Christmas, I was busy doing something completely different.

Earlier this year I was having some cravings to play some of the games I used to love on the SNES. While the vast majority of SNES games are mediocre, completely forgettable, and have deteriorated with time, there were some special gems that are classics no matter when they are played. Some of those classic games provide a type of gaming experience that just isn't found in modern games. While I knew they were special at the time, I didn't realize how unique they were as I expected them to be copied and polished repeatedly over the years. Instead, there was a rapid transition to 3D and a generally different type of gaming…progression to higher quality 2D and of old ideas generally didn't happen. So, I came to realize if I wanted to keep any of that old style experience I better get some of the old stuff together. :) I also have some little girls that might like playing around with it some eventually…some of those SNES games are really good for kids.

So, I went to my parent's house where some of my old stuff was. I asked where things were at (my mom was a little excited about it, she used to play a lot of RPGs and strategies and such on SNES), went crashing through storage rooms, and had some success. I found all my old games and some controllers, but I didn't find the console itself. The games were the most important thing, so I was at least happy about that.

Well…my dad likes to use Ebay. So, I made a list of some of the games didn't already own but wanted. Gave it to my parents and told them it would be something I wanted for Christmas. They have had trouble knowing of any good things to get me for Christmas and such in recent years so they were probably happy to finally have a cheat sheet in hand.

Christmas rolls around and they did in fact get some games from the list. :) Okay…"new" games in hand…time to get serious. Day after Christmas - back over to my parent's house to look for the console one last time. My mom thought there was one last place it might be or else she thinks my younger sister had taken it somewhere she was babysitting at one time and left it there. Well…I do find the NES, but the SNES is still unfound and probably gone. I knew I was probably stuck with Ebay for my cheapest solution, but I'm not a huge fan of Ebay buying… it can be aggravating and a pain sometimes…as well as the potential for getting cheated somehow. Besides, I didn't feel like waiting. :D We have some "Vintage Stock" stores around town that deal in all the old school nerd ambrosia…so off to the nearest one. They didn't have any SNES's on hand (sold out) and at least one of their other stores didn't have any either. But, they are selling these newly manufactured "FC Twin" systems that are copy jobs that play both the 8-bit NES and 16-bit SNES games on the same hardware. I'm normally quite skeptical of non-original hardware, but this place is pretty serious about this kind of stuff and I also have 30 days to return it if it doesn't work right. So, I bought it.

So far, I'm quite happy with it. I at least briefly tested every SNES game I have and they all worked. Super Mario Bros. 2 worked in the 8-bit slot - although it seems just as finicky getting getting good contact on the old NES carts as on a regular NES system. It hooks up with with AV cables (normal RCA connectors on both ends) and comes with 2 new controllers that are essentially exact copies of the original ones except for different color plastic on the body and the different name. The new controllers were nice because mine were pretty worn from heavy usage. So, while a more normal person would be playing Halo 3 right now, I'm playing "Breath of Fire" and enjoying it just as much as I did in 1994. :D

Anyway…here's some of the games I already had (ones I care about off the top of my head):

Super Mario World
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Final Fantasy III
Chrono Trigger
Romance of the Three Kingdoms III
Inindo (this game rocks and hardly anyone knew about it)
Uncharted Waters: New Horizons
Street Fighter II: Turbo
(and some others I'm either not remembering or don't care a whole bunch about)

For Christmas I got: (I can't imagine getting a haul like this back in the mid 90's.)

Final Fantasy II
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire II

Important games still on my list:

Earthbound
Secret of Mana
Ogre Battle
Super Metroid
Contra III
Megaman X

Less important but would like to have:

Shadowrun
Secret of Evermore
King Arthur's World
Illusion of Gaia
Samurai Showdown
maybe the Lufia games, Soul Blazer, the ActRaiser games, Gradius/R-Type/Darius Twin games, Castlevania games

Wow, long post… :D

If you haven't tried it yet, get Super Mario RPG. My favorite game of all time. It's an awesome game. But, I think it's going for close to $30 on Ebay, but it's worth it :)

Secret of Mana is a great game, hope you get that soon. You might want to check into Castlevania 4 also, its another great Snes Game.

Good luck on Earthbound, Secret of Mana and Ogre Battle. I actually have a copy of both Earthbound and Ogre Battle, but they are not for sale ;)

Earthbound isn't too hard to find on eBay, and it usually goes for around $50 or less. Last I checked on SoM it was heading north of $75, and Ogre Battle was about the same.

I feel compelled to insult you for buying an FC Twin solely because it is not an actual SNES. I know it works fine (my friend bought one) but c'mon! :D

That said, you need F-Zero. And you also need to pick up Contra and SM before all your other wanted games :D.

SolidxSnake-
Heh, yeah - I was scoffing at the FC Twin stuff I was seeing on Ebay a while back… I scoff no longer! Well, I might change my mind somehow later on, but so far it's great. It's a little sad from a collector's standpoint, but I'm more about actually playing the games.

I thought about F-Zero some, but I'm afraid time probably hasn't been terribly friendly to it. Modern racers are one area of gaming that has vastly improved overall. I was kinda thinking the same thing with Tecmo Super Bowl….but I'm less decided on it. Old rosters can be kinda cool sometimes - especially considering that I was a Lions / Barry Sanders fan. Playing the Lions on any football game in the last 10 years or so is kinda like playing games with the difficulty sliders moved all the way over to the "I hate myself" setting.

I can see you're into the action games… :) I like them, but have been huge on the RPG's and strategy games. They're also the sorts of games that tend to weather time better. I will probably get Super Metroid fairly soon - partly because it's usually not all that expensive since it was so widely popular.

Oni-
Yeah, I've already been looking on Ebay occasionally for Earthbound, SoM, and Ogre Battle. Earthbound seems to be the most available on Ebay - since it has such a following…price seems to stay steady around $50-$60. SoM is usually for sale too, but more volatile pricing…I've seen anywhere from $35-$90 seemingly. Mostly depending on how collector friendly the sale appears to be. Ogre Battle I can usually find for sale, but not always…it's hard to tell what the final prices end up being. I think I'm actually willing to pay some fairly high prices for these ones if I have to.

Cornbread-
Secret of Mana was one of my huge favorites of all time. I don't know if anyone ever played Crystalis on NES…but that was a neat game. SoM is a lot like it but vastly improved overall. My Castlevania experiences are kinda limited. They were always rentals or borrows for me and I've never finished one all the way…they were always fun, but frustrating. I'm not sure which one people generally consider the best of of the series and such.

Burninate-
I played through Super Mario RPG once. Honestly, it wasn't one of my favorites, but I did consider it a well made and well polished game. At the time, I was a hardcore RPG player and I was like…Mario in an RPG, wtf? It didn't have the real serious plot and setting I was accustomed to in an RPG, was a little short, and I wasn't much into the little "hit the button at the right time while fighting things" thing it had going on. At the same time, my best friend in high school loved the game and played it over and over…he had much less prior exposure to RPGs and the game turned him into an RPG addict. So, the game was always pretty special to him and he always got real sensitive if anyone ever ripped on it. It's a game I'll probably keep an eye out for but won't likely go out of my way to get until I have a lot of the other things I'm looking for.

On another topic…did anyone else actually play King Arthur's World before? It's a pretty unusual game. It's sort of like a cross between Lemmings and Lost Vikings. It's a side view puzzle game like Lemmings, but with medieval units. They're more controllable than Lemmings, but not direct control like Lost Vikings…and have more diverse units and functions than either one. So, the player might have to send forward a soldier block with the shield to protect the group - follow up with a group of archers to hail arrows down on the baddies pinned down by the soldier (careful not to hit the soldier). Send in some knights to melee kill some people in a cave…engineers to build a multitude of things - catapult to kill people or break a gate. Explosives guys…dark wizard to blast a dragon…whatever ends up being required to work through a zone and eventually pave the way for the all important King Arthur unit to get to the end. :) I thought it was pretty neat…one of the few games that supported the SNES mouse. (which I didn't have) I rented it a few times and only managed about halfway through the game…got pretty difficult eventually.

Zelda: A Link to the Past
Final Fantasy III
Chrono Trigger

For Christmas I got: (I can't imagine getting a haul like this back in the mid 90's.)

Final Fantasy II
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire II

Super Metroid
Contra III
Megaman X

Gradius/R-Type/Darius Twin games, Castlevania games

Ahhh the memories, i had all these games on my european snes and for them games unavailable in the euro, I got a converter and when i lived in tampa I got a few of those games. i used to have loads of snes games, over 60 and i
dont have them any more:(.

Wow how did I miss gradius? Gradius 3 was an amazing port for the SNES. Played that game all the time at my friend's house.

Ever heard of Virtual Consule?

:p:p

But neat man, there is nothing like owning a classic system. I have my Atari 2600 that I load up every now and then. Sometimes the computer actually beats me at pong..

I was glad to see Super Metroid on the VC and the GC wireless controls can be used. I'll give the kid a few more days on her new Wii....then Dads gonna take over.:)

I got her SMG but even she finds it childish, Should have got FarCry.

For the great games like earthbound and som, try checking craigslist. Ive seen them there for reasonable prices. You'll probably want to make sure that the games been tested

Secret of Mana <---- added to collection and playing :D

I got a bit lucky and got a copy on Ebay for a pretty reasonable price that had everything in the original package with it. Box, book, map, dust cover, and even the useless papers Nintendo packs in. It all appeared to be well taken care of, too. :) Brand new 15 year old game FTW!

I love these nostalgia threads. Super Metroid was one of the best games ever on the SNES, same with Zelda: A Link to the Past, and SoM. And Chrono Trigger.

You should get Vegas Stakes, it's a pretty fun casino game, and has a good casino-type soundtrack to it. Probably nothing special today considering all of the gambling games that have surpassed it, but back in the day it was pretty cool.

Another classic is Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, but you'll want to pickup a Super GameBoy accessory to play it. That's my favorite Zelda game, I thought it had a really good storyline and tied into the established Zelda canon very well at the time. Plus I prefer the overhead-view Zelda games to the newer 3D-style Zelda games. That's probably why I like Children of Mana so much on the DS, same kind of style.

And the original Mario Kart! That's an absolute classic that shouldn't be too hard to find. There was also a vertical-scrolling shooter, a two-player game like Galaga, but I cannot remember the name. It's very similar to Galactic Attack on the Sega Saturn, in fact I think it was made by the same company (Acclaim).

I'm trying to think of some others but it seems like so long ago. Have fun!
