I have a hd6970 and a 6950 underneath it, on idle desktop no programs running the 70's at 68 celsius and the 50's at 45.

Currently have a 140mm fan blowing air into the small open gap on the side of the cards.

I have a Corsair 650d case with no open side window.

Any advice/recommendations?

Get a 60mm fan at 6000RPM to blow between the cards. Honestly, you need to increase airflow as much as you can. A 140mm fan in that teeny area isn't doing much at all, a 140 mm in a teeny part of its coverage, and being poor pressure due to the 140mm fan, isn't helping much.

One you go Xfire or SLI, your going to have high temps. Do the best you can with case fans and fans just for the GPUs.
