Got the Gigabyte 5870 covered in vaseline and its ready to rock. I'm eating dinner, and getting a couple items downloaded to get ready.

I don't have any voltage control other than OC Guru. Its a non-reference vreg, so if anyone has a lead on a modded bios that yields more voltage for a Gigabyte 5870, I am interested. Otherwise, I'll just be seeing how far it scales with cold.

Livestream will be embedded in this thread once I'm live, and you can also watch it at www.livestream.com/overclockers

Have you tried opening the bios file in RadeonBiosEditor?
If not you could give it a shot, or send me the bios and I'll poke it. Odds are it won't work, but you never know.

I'll stop in if possible!

Gigabyte OC Guru is flaky. Not sure what voltage I set, but I had it at its max setting all night... It gave a reading of 1.07V on the core. GPUZ read 1.125V on the core, no matter what I set in OC Guru. :eh?:

Once I got things frozen, I realized the main probe in the base of the pot was broken, so I didn't have accurate temp readings all night. This 5870 has a cold bug, which I think might be around -70C, but I can't be sure. I had a secondary probe stuck below the insulation near the core, and it would read about -50C when I would start to get artifacting and poor performance from the card.

Anyways, pulled in around 30 points from the card in 3dm03, 3dm05, and 3dm06. The system stopped running when I was trying to get aquamark to run - not sure if that was the board getting soggy, or the card giving out. We'll see later this week once things dry out and I get a chance to try them again... I'll get the probe fixed first though. Any way you cut it though, this 5870 is no where near as good as the 4890, and I would need better voltage control to get much better scores.

3dm06 13 boints: http://hwbot.org/community/submission/2163505_i.m.o.g._3dmark06_radeon_hd_5870_31850_marks
3dm05 14.1 boints:

I'll beat all those scores once I get the temp probe replaced.
