Ordinary thermal compound is a mixture of dimethylpolysiloxane (silicone oil) and zinc oxide. Basically Silly Putty and sunscreen, so it's "safe" to handle.

BTW, dimethylpolysiloxane is found in many fast foods!

Getting thermal paste on your hands is much better than in your mouth -- depending on your tastes Personally I like a good thermal paste on my pancakes -- it's fat free.
