i've been bitten by the SETI bug. i'm curently running three systems. the
one in my sig, a PIII@800/133 and a K6@233/66. but i'm addicted and
want more :p.

i found these two threads here and here. i almost replied to one of them.
when i double checked the post was from 01. no one replied saying that
they have run SETI on an Xbox.

a little googling brought me to the Xbox Linux project site. they have allot
of information/links on running Linux on a Xbox.

the Xbox has a 733Mhz celly. it's pretty compact. doesn't require allot
of juice from what i understand. as an added bonus, i heard to compete
with SONY for market shares, MS cut their prices so much they loose
$$ on every sale of an Xbox :D.

i just found a place that has referbs for $130 with a warranty.

i'm looking for a good bang per buck farm. space and power efficiency
is also a concern.

if you have any thoughts about an Xbox farm, or have suggestions
for PC alternatives. i sure would be glad to hear from ya ;)

I am mostly a folder, but I would say that a barebones AthlonXP1700+/cheap mobo/PC133 RAM setup would be more cost effective. You could run them diskless, either from a pendrive, CDROM or LAN.

A 733MHz Celly isnt really that powerful and I would think an XP1700+ would be 2-3 times faster due to better IPC, more cache and faster bus speed.

David,

i am considering going the AMD rout. maybe even dualies. Chris' article
on the front page spiked my interest. he also recommended the 1700+.

i would like to run them diskless to save on electricity and the cost of drives.
i'd prolly boot them via LAN. good point sir.

your right about the celly not being that fast and having a small cache.

[edit]
[strike]maybe i'll start looking at AMD hardware.[/strike]

i'm looking into AMD hardware. [/edit]

thanks David :D

Maybe you should consider a P4c 2,4. OC it to 3,3 - 3,5 and you get 14 - 18 WU´s per day. At least thats what the guys in this group is getting. And that´s from a single cpu rig!

Edit: Sorry did not see that you already had a P4!
