So im looking to upgrade my cpu, and I have a MS-7184 mobo, the oem version of msi MS-7093. On cpuupgrade.com it states that it would be compatible with any socket 939 cpu, up to amd athlon 64 x2 4800+ but the cpu I want is the Athlon 64 x2 6000+ and its only 20 bucks more than the 4800. so wouldnt any am2 socket 939 cpu be compatible with that mobo? The mobo is so old i would assume its page on cpuupgrade.com hasnt been updated in a while so im hoping it would work. But before i order it, can anybody confirm whether it would work or not? Id hate to through away 80 bucks on a cpu i end up never using.

Howdy Ligerius,

Welcome to the forums!
:welcome:

Looking at the OEM's page, it looks like it's still limited to a 4800+ maximum. You probably won't be able to use anything above that.

Once of the AMD experts may have more information for you, when they stop by.

That is a Socket 939 motherboard and the 6000+ is an AM2 CPU. I'm sorry to say the two are NOT compatible. Unlike the newer AMD platforms, socket 939 does not interchange with any other socket.

In the Athon series the 4800+ is the fastest CPU available at 2400 MHz but the Opteron 1xx CPUs (165, 170, 175, 180, and 185) are also s939 dual core CPU's as is the FX-60. The Opteron 185 and FX-60 have the highest stock speed of the s939 CPU's at 2600 MHz.

Also note that motherboard requires DDR memory modules, NOT DDR2. DDR-400 is the standard RAM for socket 939. :)

ah damn i thought s939 was am2, cuz on geeks.com for 50 bucks they are selling an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.5GHz 2x512KB Socket AM2 Dual-Core CPU which is the same type cpu as is compatible with my mobo, but i guess amd made that same cpu for 2 different sockets. oh well, i guess im gonna have to go ahead and upgrade my mobo, ram, and cpu. its about time anyways, this thing is a 6 year old emachines i got at black friday that was good when i got it, but i guess its time to move on. well anyways thanks for saving me 80 bucks! would have been quite a waste lol

hi there,

do u know for sure that opterons work with MSI MS-7184?

would be great, if they do :)

cheers, respect

Socket 939 Opterons work on the MS-7184. Would avoid the 180,185 models though as CnQ/PowerNow might not work correctly or at all. Boards of this age suffer failing capacitors. I have one and have replaced capacitors in it.

The Athlon 64 6000+ is a 125 watt TDP CPU where as the 4800+ is like 65W. The 6000+ will draw way to much power for that motherboard.
