The stock one that came on my motherboard is almost identical to this one here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835114031

The problem is that it is a complete POS when paired with my T9400 CPU. (Socket P) Not planning on OCing this one. Mainly for watching media on 1080p TV.
It seems to idle about 47c. While moving the motherboard to a new SG05 case I replaced the chipset cooler with a new one as it was overheating and shutting down, and I oiled the CPU fan and now it is clicking... :bang head
so I am looking to replace at least the fan, if not he whole cooler. problem is that there is very little clearance on the motherboard around the unit.

I was looking at one of these three options:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835221015

I have about 3 inches of space above the CPU, but I would like the sound level to be as low as possible.

Please no watercooling suggestions, not happening for this build.
Thanks!

Since you have a little extra headroom, I would suggest that you go with a 40 X 20 mm or even a 40 x 28 mm fan as a replacement to the stock fan. And try to stay at around 30-32 dBA max since you don't want to put up with a whiny little fan. This Sunon 40x40x20mm Fan KD1204PKB2 might be a decent replacement choice. Or this Sunon MagLev KD1204PKVX 40x40x20 too, which actually flows more air but still is well under 30 dB. There is also this Sunon 40 x 40 x 28 Mag Lev - GM1204PQV1-8A, but at 36.5 dB it might be a little too whiny for you.

So you need a new fan, or a new HSF? If you just need a new fan it might be worth it to get something like this: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1...mic_Fan_Adaptor_-_UV_Blue.html?tl=g47c121s262 Use a slightly bigger fan for more air and less noise.

Excellent suggestion, I forgot those things existed.
According to my DB meter (cheapo from radio shack) my current CPU fan is making about 77db at .5" which is horrific to me.

Ok now, how about some reccomendations for a 60mm fan then?
I buy cheap for case fans, but for this I want something quality.

muddocktor, I assume you are advocating the sunon fans? I had never heard of them before today. can you reccomend any other brands that are quality?

Currently leaning towards either Sunon MagLev KD1204PKVX 40x40x20 as you suggested or RCOOL EC6025 60mm Case Fan with a 60mm to 40mm adapter.

Thanks again!

Sunon as a company has been around a long time and the fans they make are good and are reliable also. They used to be much better known back in the days when heatsinks were much smaller than today and used 60-80 mm sized fans. Those fans should give years of reliable operation.

If you don't want to go with Sunon, I also found this 40x40x20 mm Delta for $3.49 each. Delta is known for making server class fans and at 24.5 dB, is pretty darn quiet.

Sunon makes great fans. Sanyo Denki is also good, and so is Delta and Panasonic (Panaflo). Sunon tends to make more of the smaller sized fans than the other.

Here's a couple, at a nice price too:

The other nice thing about a 40mm-60mm adapter is that it'll act like a duct, helping to mitigate the rather large dead spot on the 40mm stock fan. That's nice when you have a heatsink like yours with very little surface area.
